『Start Something（何かを始めよう）』というアルバム・タイトルは、ロストプロフェッツのスローガンにふさわしい。彼らが本作でやろうとしていることをズバリと言い表しているからだ。ファースト・アルバム『The Fake Sound of Progress』で提示したニュー・メタル路線を続けることに飽き足りなかったロストプロフェッツは、みずからの視野を広げ、前作を掘り下げることよりも方向転換することに重点を置いてセカンド・アルバムを制作したのである。自分たち本来のロックな持ち味を大きく損なわない範囲で、さまざまな方向へと手を伸ばした彼らは、エモやハードコアはもちろん、最近のツアーメイトであるリンキン・パークの影響なのか、よりポピュラーなジャンルと言えそうなヒップ・ホップ風味のメタルにも挑戦している（「We Still Kill the Old Way」と「Make a Move」は特に注目）。
ファースト・シングル曲「Burn, Burn」はレイジ・アゲインスト・ザ・マシーン風。ティーンの苦悩を描いたキャッチーなアンセムで、リフが深い余韻を残す。異彩を放つセカンド・シングル曲「Last Train Home」では、ロストプロフェッツのアメリカの友人たち（たとえば、ゲスト・ヴォーカルとして参加しているグッド・シャーロット）を食いかねない熱いエモが展開。何より、デビュー・アルバムで見せてくれた実験への意欲が、この『Start Something』でも失われていないのはうれしい。「I Don't Know」や「Goodbye Tonight」などは、アット・ザ・ドライヴ・インを始めとする近年のアメリカのハードコア＆エモのパイオニアたちを思わせるほどだ。ヴォーカルのイアン・ワトキンスの声も鍛えられ、ますますフェイス・ノー・モアのマイク・パットンに似てきた（これは誉めているのだ）。もちろん、25歳以上で『Start Something』の曲や感傷に付き合うひまがあるという人はあまりいないだろうが、ロストプロフェッツや本作を聴くべき何百万人ものロック・ファンたちが、そんなことでムキになるとは思えない。（Ted Kord, Amazon.co.uk）
