2003年3月26日発売の《ベートーヴェン：熱情ソナタ 他》に続くポリーニによるベートーヴェンのピアノ・ソナタ集です。今回は作品10の3曲（第5‐7番）と第8番《悲愴》のカップリング。「磨き上げられたピアニズム」「隅隅まで彫琢され、ていねいに音楽が紡がれている」と高い評価を得た前作同様、素晴らしい出来です。

さすがポリーニ、このようなベートーヴェン初期のソナタでも、ときに思いに沈み、ときに激情に燃えながら、小さな曲たちから、可能な限りスケール大きな宇宙を見出している。天才青年作曲家が着想した、信じがたいほど重く真摯な作品たちの姿がここにはある。第5番第2楽章や第7番第2楽章の痛みと瞑想、第6番第1楽章の強靭な意志でぐいぐいと推進する有様など、息もつかせぬ誘引力だ。《悲愴》はどっしりと豊かな響きが味わい深い。第3楽章では、ポリーニならではの“嵐”が吹き荒れる。洒脱さや遊びの感覚はポリーニには似合わない。こうした演奏は、ベートーヴェン中期や後期のソナタに一歩もひけをとらない、ずしりと手ごたえのある音楽として、全身で聴くことがふさわしい。もちろん、ポリーニならではの精力に満ちたピアニズムは健在だ。
このような演奏の前では、聴く側も真剣に作品に向かうことが要求される。20年以上も前からポリーニが弾き続け、考えに考えぬいてきたベートーヴェンの姿は、ピアノで表現できることの究極と言ってもいいくらいだ。畏敬の念をもって聴くべきディスクである。2002年9月ミュンヘンでの録音。（林田直樹）
