もともとレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズのファンではないので、この人の人生の浮き沈みは知らない。ジョン・フルシアンテの以前のソロ作のイカレっぷりとか言われても分からない。ラジオでこのアルバムの幾つかの曲がかかって、それが耳に残ったので買っただけだった。それでも♯1 "carvel"、♯9 "this cold"、♯15 "cut-out"といった曲からは彼の生き様が伝わってくる。薄っぺらではなく、本当に深い所から声を出している人だと思う。ギタリストとして以上に、シンガーとしての実力を感じた。

じゅくじゅくと鳴るアンビエントなイントロから始まるアルバム。John　Fruscianteのコードワークメインのギターサウンドに、ベルリン期のDavid Bowieを彷彿とさせるようなエフェクティブなサウンドが絡む。
全体的にフォーキーな曲が多いが、Second Walk、This Cold、Waterなどの疾走感あふれるポップな曲ではお得意の感情的なギターソロも聞ける。

前作までの打ち込みのイメージとは違います。
まず一曲目から非常にしっかりとリズムを刻むドラムが印象に残ります。
それだけでニヤッとしてしまいました。
そして肝心のジョンのギターは……ちゃんと彼の独創性の溢れるフレーズがどんどん出てきました。さらに「By The Way」などで鍛え上げられた歌声も光ります。自らのコーラスと合わさり、美しいという形容がピッタリの楽曲がたくさんあります。意外だったのが5曲目のSecond Walk。今までの恐ろしいほどの狂気は感じられませんが、今のジョンの安定した精神がこのアルバムでわかります。あ~、いい。
