最初はガイを主人公に考えていたとか。ジムがぴったりはまってました。体格からいってもこれでよかったと思います。「復讐」というテーマの作品であるため、作者は９．１１の事件を頭に思い描きながら製作したとのこと。

テーマは重くても楽しい娯楽大作であることはうれしいこと。映画にする以上は観て楽しいのが一番。

牢獄に14年間閉じ込められたにしては、主人公のエドモン・ダンテス(モンテ・クリスト伯)が青二才過ぎるところにものすごい違和感を感じる。
また、モンテ・クリスト伯自らが剣を持ち、相手に復讐する所が俗っぽくて仕方ない。
チンピラのケンカと違うんだから。
政治小説を得意とした原作者アレクサンドル・デュマの手練手管はもっと洗練されている。実際には、本人に気付かれないように、真綿で首を絞めるような復讐の仕方をするし、そこがこの小説の最大の見せ場なのだ。
純粋に映画として面白いかどうかという次元は別にして、原作には全くそぐわない映画である。
原作の面白さ、格調の高さは、こんなもんじゃない。
これを機会に、ぜひ小説で原作を読んで下さい。

原作を読んだ人、そしてフランスで制作されたテレビドラマを見た人には物足りなく感じるでしょう。
しかし、先入観なしに見ていたらそれなりに楽しめる映画だとおもいます。

あの長い原作をどうやって２時間でまとめるのかと原作が好きなだけに心配でありましたが、映画としてはそれなりによくまとまっていました。
ただ、原作が復讐シーンに焦点を当てていたのを、映画は、主人公の牢屋での成長譚とロマンスをメインにしていたのが残念なところです。
あの巧妙かつ見事な復讐がほとんど割愛されただけでなく、登場人物の奥深さが描ききれていない（時間がないので仕方ないのですが）とてもお手軽な人物設定は非常に物足りなさを感じました。
