カラヤン/ベルリンフィルという時代を代表するコンビの最高のレコーディングの1枚に違いない。ワーグナーの管弦楽曲集だ。国内盤では2枚で別売りになっていますが、そのうちパルジファルを除いて1枚になっています。
収録時間は77分。曲目は
「マイスタジンガー第1幕への前奏曲」
「タンホイザー序曲とヴェーヌスベルクの音楽」
「ローエングリン第1幕への前奏曲」
「同第3幕への前奏曲」
「さまよえるオランダ人序曲」
「トリスタンとイゾルデ前奏曲と愛の死」の6曲。

オーケストラの美麗の限りを究め尽くした名演にして名録音といっていいでしょう！特に絶品といえるのがタンホイザー序曲。
ここは通常のドレスデン版ではなくパリ版が採用されています。
ドレスデン版では再現部からコーダへ向かい曲は終わるのですが、パリ版では壮麗な主題の提示に続いて怒涛の展開が待ちうけます。
様変わりする音楽、大海のような壮大なうねり、そして巨大な嵐のような燦然と輝くクライマックス。派手に鳴るカスタネットの雨！
まさに音響の限りを尽くしたゴージャスぶり。
これを聴いてしまうと、通常のドレスデン版がものたりなくてしょうがない！
そして静謐な合唱をともなうヴェーヌスベルクの音楽へ・・・
ワーグナーの陶酔感とカラヤンの美学の融合です。
