鬼平のイメージといえば「悪党畜生には鬼のように恐れられているが、まっとうに世の中渡ろうとしている者にとってはこれほど心強いお方はいない。」これは凶剣の一節だったろうか。今回の「男のまごころ」「妖盗葵小僧」を見ているとやさしさと恐ろしさを両面感じることができるようだ。
　
　第7シリーズは96年と97年にまたがって分割して放送された。これには、当時ラジオで聞いた小野田監督の話によれば、彦十役の猫八さんの体調不良などが要因とされている。特に序盤の3話「麻布ねずみ坂」「男のまごころ」「妖盗葵小僧」の3本はどれも出来がよく、見ごたえがある。
　
　ただ、この97年放送分からドラマのボルテージは下がってきたように当時思えた。原作の消化も要因だと思う。ゲストも多少地味に感じるシリーズとなった。いささか辛口のように聞こえるかもしれないが、「麻布ねずみ坂」「男のまごころ(原作/鈍牛)」「妖盗葵小僧」は過去の東宝のシリーズでもドラマ化されていたが平成版は少しソフトな表現のような気もする。
