圧倒的な描写力を持つカールツァイスT*レンズの実力を存分に活かすために開発されたモデル。TTL位相差検出方式AFは、被写体を肉眼で追うような感覚での撮影を可能にし、デュアルフォーカスメカニズム搭載のレンズと組み合わせれば、AF時のフォーカスロック状態からレンズの距離リングを回転させるだけで、瞬時にマニュアルモードに切り替わり、ピントの微調整ができる。
撮影操作も新たに構築。撮影を3つのステップとして捉え、「撮影をはじめる前」「撮影シーンに合わせて」「ワンショットごとに」とそれぞれのステップごとにダイヤル類をまとめて配置。その結果、ほとんどの操作がファインダーをのぞいたままで可能にするなど独自の工夫を盛り込んでいる。
また測光システムも3種類用意。撮影画面を5分割して測光し最適な露出値を計算する「評価測光」を使えば、逆光でもほとんど露出補正なしで撮影ができるなど、微妙な露出条件のもとでも3種類の測光システムを使い分ければ戸惑うことなく撮影が可能となる。（円道ヒデカズ）
