   オリジナルビデオ作品として始まったシリーズから続く1989年公開の劇場版。近未来、汎用人型機械・レイバーが一般に使用されるようになったが、レイバーを利用した犯罪も相次ぎ、これを防ぐため警察もレイバーを導入。このパトレイバー小隊の活躍を描くのが本シリーズの基本設定。
   本作はコンピュータウイルスによるレイバーの暴走から事件は始まるものの、やがては「東京」という都市そのものに言及していくことになり、単なるロボットものの範囲を大きく逸脱。シリーズものではあるものの、その一編というよりまさしく押井守監督の作品といった方がふさわしく、その独自の演出が存分に堪能できる。（田中　元）

ブックレット・コンテなどが封入された、ファンとしては嬉しい仕様ですが、ＤＶＤが分厚いコンテＢＯＯＫの表紙に埋め込まれ（？）、なおかつその上にビニールカバーが掛かっている状態なので、若干取り出しに不自由を感じます。

カバー自体は外しやすいように工夫されていますので、既に別でＤＶＤを持っていて、コンテ等を目的に購入されるという方や、たまに見たいという程度の頻度なら気にしないと思いますが、頻繁に取り出して視聴したいという方にはわずらわしく感じられるかもしれません。

ストーリー、映像、演出、どれをとっても未だに色あせない魅力を持ち続けている映画です。そして劇場版シリーズ、唯一レイバーや第２小隊が大活躍する映画でもあります。まずオープニングでの自衛隊機の暴走と、いきなり見応えのあるシーンから始まります。そして後半箱舟に乗り込んでからのシーンは、何度見ても圧倒されます。また劇場版ガンダムシリーズでは失敗した5.1ch化ですが、パトレイバーシリーズでは成功したと思います。しかもガンダムとは違い、オリジナル音源も収録してあるのは魅力的です。価格も既売品より安く特典満載となれば、既に所有していても欲しくなりますね。

パトレイバーの劇場版１作目は新型レイバー零式と、それに搭載されているレイバー用ＯＳの暴走を巡る話。自分の父親の会社である篠原重工業製のＯＳを搭載したレイバーが暴走する中、真実を探るために奮闘する篠原遊馬や第２小隊の活躍が５．１ｃｈサラウンドの臨場感で楽しめます。劇場版２作目ではキャラクターデザインがリアルな作品の設定に馴染むよう重厚なデザインに変わっているので「ゆうきまさみさんのキャラデザがイイ！」という人には、間違いなくこちらをオススメします。愛嬌あるキャラとはいえ、コンピューターウィルスやバビロン計画などテーマは見ごたえのある、しっかりとしたモノです。また「リミテッド・エディション」は、設定資料に絵コンテ、貴重なインタビューなどＡ５サイズに完全網羅した、ハードブックジャケット付きという付加価値の高い、公式ガイドブックがセットされています。
