Prefuse73名義では先鋭的なHIPHOPを展開して一躍スターになった感もあるスコット・ヘレンですが、このSavath and Savalasでは一転して生演奏にこだわったチルアウトなサウンドを聴かせてくれます。

本作は途中EPを挟んだものの、各所で絶賛された1stから約4年ぶりとなる待望の2ndアルバムです。ジョン・マッケンタイア、ジョン・ヘーンドン、ジョシュ・エイブラムスなどシカゴ人脈も多数参加。しかしここまでやってくれるとは･･･。いい意味で期待を裏切る出来に驚きました。
前作譲りのアコースティック＆ジャジーな演奏に加えて、

今作では全編女性ヴォーカルをフィーチャーして、ワールドミュージック色も加味。
前作以上にラウンジっぽいですが、甘すぎず、ヌルすぎず、いい意味でポップ。
さらにヴォーカルとそれぞれのパートの音響バランスが絶妙で、これがやばいくらい気持ちいいんです。

路線そのものは大きく変わらないものの、歌ものになって1stやEPの延長を求める向きには微妙かもしれませんが、個人的には歓迎したい変化です。くどいようですが傑作ですよ。

Prefuse73名義の時とは打って変わって，
はっとするような美しいメロディーを聴かせるSavath and Savalasでの2nd．
1stに収録されていた"journey to home"が公文式のCMで流れていたのも記憶に新しい．

今回はスペインでの録音でリリースはheftyではなくてwarp．
warpも随分と変わってきましたね．
全体としては前回の雰囲気のまま女性ボーカルを全体に導入．
mice paradeの新作辺りの感じに似てます．

長く聴ける良盤．

エレクロニカなるジャンルが興隆を迎える今、一昔前に興隆を誇ったアブストラクトミュージックと言うジャンルがだいぶシーンのなかで目立たない存在となっている。

エレクトロニカとアブストラクトミュージック。
どちらも都市の中の喧騒の中でうずもれた呟きのようなものを音像化したような存在だ。

違いがあるとすればそれがデジタルであるかアナログな肌触りがするかということ。

僕はグランジミュージックがシーンを席巻し、ヒップホップがアンダーグラウンドカルチャーから面白い音を届ける存在として機能したときに青春時代を過ごした人間なので、やはりアナログ的な音ざわりに思い入れがある。

しかし最近のシーンでは、アナログ的な音ざわりの音楽がどんどん隅に追いやられている現状。

そんな中でこれは、という盤にめぐり合った。

SAVATH & SAVALASの「Apropa't」。
オルタナティブ・ヒップホップの最重要人物といわれるスコット・へレンによるユニットである。

エレクトロニカシーンのなかでも名の通っているらしい彼だが、本作品では「生楽器の感触にこだわりたい」という思いでレコーディングに臨んだらしい。

その作品を全編ミックスで携わったのは、かのトータスのジョン・マッケンタイア。
デジタル的な作品の音像をアナログ的な音ざわりに変えてしまう名手である。

かくしてここに僕好みの作品が出来上がった。

アナログ的な音像と言うのはとかく郷愁の念を刺激する。エレクトロニカが興隆のときにある今、これが時代の音だ！とは言わない。

でも僕はこんな音に反応してしまうのだ。
そこには紛れもなくちょいとばかり年を取っってしまったぼくにも感応できる都市の寂しさがあるから。
