ポール･デイビスのイラストによるジャケットがほほえましくアルバムのイメージを印象付けている。モンクはやっぱりソロがいい。もちろんコンポーザーとしてもアレンジャーとしても優れたモンクゆえ、様々なユニットでの音楽性を発揮できるのだが、最もダイレクトにモンクの世界に浸るにはソロという形式に勝るものはないだろう。ダイナというとディック･ミネを思い出すが、オールドファッションなストライド･ピアノのモンクは郷愁を感じるし、アイ・サレンダー,ディア、スウィート・アンド・ラヴリー、ノース・オブ・ザ・サンセット、ルビー,マイ・ディアと続くモンクのリリカルでユーモラスな世界は他の追随を許さない。それにしても9曲ものボーナストラックを追加したこのＣＤはものすごいお徳盤だ。これほどモンクの世界に没入できるアルバムも珍しいのではないだろうか。モンクの真骨頂を様々な演奏で楽しめるお奨めの一枚だ。

3枚のソロの内、「ソロ・モンク」は最も聴きやすいと思われる一枚。
"DINAH"、"I SURRENDER, DEAR"、"RUBY, MY DEAR"、
"THESE FOOLISH THINGS"等非常にキャッチーな曲が並びます。
モンクのソロ作品は完璧に閉じ、なおかつ無限に広がる世界を感じさせます。
都会と大自然、空と海、小さな部屋と宇宙。一見は可愛らしいちょこんとしたバラード、
しかしその中には何だって思い描ける様な純粋性があります。
感情ではなく感覚。この感覚を失くさずに持ち続け、形にできる人はとても少ない。
独特なキーの外し方や、でこぼこの坂道を行くようなリズムの移り変わり。
ジャズを聴き始めて間もない頃、モンクを僕に強く勧めてくれた友人は
「これはモンクがいつも自分の音を探してる証拠だと思う」と言っていました。
今はその言葉が少しわかる気がします。百人いれば百通りの情緒がある。
この作品に収められているのは、セロニアス・モンクという一人の人間の自然な
自己表現、それを映した心象風景なのだと思います。

本当に聴きやすいピアノソロアルバムです。・・とはいっても、今で言うニューエイジ系ピアノや癒し系音楽の様に、あっさりと小綺麗なサウンド・演奏で終わる訳も当然なく、美しい楽曲群の中にもどこかブルージーでアクの強いサウンドが交えられているので、「これはジャズである」と、造詣の低い私でも分かりその雰囲気が感じられる、素晴らしいジャズ系ソロアルバムであると思います。
あからさまな不協和音にモンク特有のズレたタッチやシンコペーションをもってすれば、ドラムやベースを要さずとも黒人ジャズの空気・グルーヴ感が出せることを、本作は鮮烈に感じさせてくれました。しかし、トリオなどのバンド形態の作品からするとやや認知度が低くなってしまっている様にも思えるのが、残念なところでもあります。ちゃんと再発されているのですから、私が知らないだけで認知度も評価も高いのかもしれませんが。。
この作品からジャズを聴き始められても、「ジャズは苦手かもしれない・・」といった感じにはならない、どなたにとってもメロディアスで聞きやすく奥深い、珠玉の名作品集であると思います。
