'93年以来の再結成，さらには，'82-'83年以来20年ぶりの本格的なツアーを開始したサイモン＆ガーファンクルの不朽の名作が，再販となりました！　内容的には，先ごろ(2003/10/22)発売された紙ケース仕様の限定盤と，パッケージを除けば変わりありませんが，全曲二人の監修のもとデジタル・リマスタリングを行った音源は非常にクリアで，旧盤しかお持ちでない方にはお勧めです．

1965年に発表されたサイモン＆ガーファンクルの2作目のオリジナル・アルバム．必ずしもポールの意図したところではなかったとはいえ，大ヒットした「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」を受けて制作した作品であり，彼らの人気を確立したともいえる作品であり，全米チャートに143週チャート・インした超ロング・セラーです．

「1. サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」や「11. アイ・アム・ア・ロック」というフォークにロックのテイストを加えた大ヒット曲のほか，サイモン＆ガーファンクルらしい，美しいメロディの秀作「2. 木の葉は緑」や「9. 4月になれば彼女は」など，フォークからフォークロックへと変わりつつある，このアルバムならではの名曲の数々を収録しています．

ボーナス・トラックには，「明日にかける橋」の後に作られたらしい，'70年7月8日録音の未発表テイクを収録．資料的な価値も非常に高いアルバムです．

タイトル作「Sound of Silence」は中学生の時ヒットしたものだが、それまで歌謡曲しか聴いていなかった私を洋楽の世界へ導いてくれた記念の曲。2小節目から始まるエレキ・ベースとドラムスのアレンジは、二人がイギリスに行っている留守にプロデューサが勝手に加えたものだが、それを差し引いても深遠な歌詞とそれを包む心に響くサウンドは胸に迫るものがあった。

「Kathy's Song」はポールの孤独感をキャシーという女性(実はイギリス)に語りかける切ない歌。「April Come She Will」は韻を強調した軽いラブソング。私は「韻を踏む」という事の意味と面白さを本曲で知った。「I Am A Rock」はS&Gにしては珍しいロック調の曲で、これも自らの孤独感をベースに「友達なんかいらない、私は岩、私は島」と歌う悲壮感が壮絶。

「Sound of Silence」の大ヒットまでは恵まれない状況にあった二人だけに、全体に孤独感と心の故郷イギリスへの憧憬が感じられる。それだけ、二人のナマの姿がそのまま味わえる貴重なアルバム。
