S&Gをとりあえず聴きたい方にはおススメできるベスト盤です。
彼らの代表曲がほぼ時代順に並んでいますし、収録曲は納得の名曲ばかりです。便利な一枚です。
また、解散後に二人で録音してそれぞれのソロアルバムに収録した「マイリトルタウン」も入っていて、気が利いています。
「あの曲が入ってない」「この曲も聴きたい」という方は、オリジナルアルバムでどうぞ。

30数年前の曲なのに、今聴いてもあの当時初めて聴いたときの衝撃と、新しい感動がよみがえってきます。
もっとも本当の名曲とはそういうものなのでしょうが・・・
｢サウンド・オブ・サイレンス｣｢ミセス・ロビンソン｣｢スカボロー・フェア｣では映画｢卒業｣の名場面が懐かしく思い出され
後にドラマ｢人間・失格｣で｢冬の散歩道」がテーマソングになったときもとても新鮮な驚きがありました。

昔は哲学っぽい部分もあって難しいと思った詩の曲もあったのですが、今改めて訳詩を読むと実に奥が深く
ただメロディとハーモニーの美しさに、ひたすら聴き入っていたころに比べると、今はじめて深い部分で理解できた気がして、しみじみと感動を覚えました。

ベスト集というと、ライブからの収録が多い場合があり、拍手の音が気になったりするものですが、このアルバムでは、ライブ・ヴァージョンは「エミリー・エミリー｣一曲のみなのでほとんど気にならないと思います。本人自らが選んだ選曲というだけあり、どの曲も素晴らしく｢明日に架ける橋｣、｢ボクサー｣など、すべてが珠玉の名曲ぞろいなので、本当にお勧めです。

私が中学生になって洋楽に目覚めた頃、Ｓ＆Ｇはビートルズと同じように解散していました。しかし、レコード会社があの手この手で曲を組み合わせたＬＰを売っており、私もそのうちの１枚（２枚組みだったかもしれない）を買って夢中で何度もターン・テーブルにのせました。ビートルズとともに英語の歌詞の素晴しさに気づかせてくれたのもＳ＆Ｇが最初です。今でもサウンド・オブ・サイレンスは歌詞カードを見ずに歌えますし、香草の名前を覚えたのもスカボロー・フェアが初めてでした。その後、Ｓ＆Ｇとは縁遠い音楽を聴くようになりましたが、Ｓ＆Ｇは私にとっての洋楽初体験の一つ。ここにＳ＆Ｇの主要曲がほとんど揃った作品を入手することができ、嬉しさと懐かしさで一杯です。アートの天使の声、それに負けないポールの声とギター、２人の声が組み合わさったときの震えがくるような美しさ。そして歌詞の秀逸さ。Ｓ＆Ｇの格別優れた曲（私はボクサーが一番好きですが）を選りすぐった本作は、中年の人にも、アメリカ６０年代の良心を探求し始めた人にもお薦めの作品です。
