基本的には放映当時流行していたロボット物だが、それにスポコンの要素がかなり強く加わった珍しいＳＦスポコンアニメ。「巨人の星」の親子のドラマに近い雰囲気が持ち込まれている。始めはいわゆる子供向きのロボット･アニメとして始まった作品だが、途中から登場する敵の美男将校トニー･ハーケンが女性視聴者に人気が出た為、やや番組の路線が変更される。風も無いのになびく主人公の髪に時代が感じられる。
