実際のモディリアニがかなりハンサムなので、Ｇ・フィリップが演じてるのは真実味倍増です。
それにしても！白黒なのに、恋人ジャンヌ役Ａ・エーメから色彩を感じます！清純で温かく献身的なオーラを！いや、もう、彼女の美しさを堪能するだけでも意味あります！ああ、美男美女。目の保養です。

悪徳画商モレル役リノ・ヴァンチュラも本当に悪いヤツで、最後の何と残酷な事よ！と思います。
モディが素描をカフェで売ろうとして席を回るシーンなんて、私が買う！って思います（今の時代の人間はきっと全員そう思います）。
Ａ・エーメ以外の女優陣も◎だし、友人役ジェラール・セティなど男優陣も◎。皆さんとても巧いです。

この作品は本当はマックス・オフュールスが監督するはずでしたが、撮影前日に急死したため、「現金に手を出すな」のジャック・ベッケルが監督することになって生まれた名作です。いかにも悪者という感じのリノ・ヴァンチュラ（名演！）演じる画商が、モジリアーニの死を確認した後、何も知らない妻から絵を買い漁るラストは圧巻です！自分の信じる芸術の道を貫くモジリアーニを演じたジェラール・フィリップも繊細さがよく出ていて良かったですが、当時２６歳だったアヌーク・エーメの美しいこと！元愛人の美術評論家のリリ-・パルマー、親友のポーランド人詩人のジェラール・セティ、アパートの管理人のおばあちゃんなど助演者もいい味が出ていました。

　今では本の表紙になることもしょっちゅうのモジリアニ作品だが、彼が存命中はまるで人に知られることはなかった。その作品の価値が人々に知られうことになったきっかけの、何と残酷なこと！ジャック・ベッケルによる、モノクロの陰影を巧みに使った映像。そして、鋭い視点から衝撃的にモジリアニの晩年が綴られる。
　モジリアニの性格、心身的な弱さ、不幸な運命。支えてくれた女性とのあまりに悲惨な生活。この男女を、モジリアニと同じく36歳の若さでこの世をさることになったＧ．フィリップと、「男と女」のアヌーク・エーメが演じる。
