アヴァンギャルド・ロックの第一人者、フランク・ザッパの没後10周年記念盤。現代音楽祭にも招かれ成功を収めていた彼の作品を、室内アンサンブルによる新しい解釈で聴ける。

アンサンブル・モデルンとザッパの出合いは運命的だったんだなあと思った。自分の頭と手とを一致させてくれる演奏者集団の形成はままならぬものと感じ続けていたザッパの作品が死後こうして練り上げられるのもまた、音楽家としての運命というものかなあと思う。まったくこのアルバムには感心した。『イエロー・シャーク』は生前のザッパが直接指揮した作品としては最晩年の名作として記憶に残るが、それがザッパという音楽家を歴史上の大家として知らしめる出発点だったということがこの盤でよくわかる。モデルンの演奏はスウィングしグルーヴもよく創意に富みスリルにあふれている。しかも『イエロー・シャーク』のときよりも踏み込んでいる。遠慮が薄まったぶんだけ解釈が柔らかくなり響きが豊かになった。大作「グレッガリー・ペッカリーの冒険」への取り組みも見事だ。記憶の中のかつてのザッパ自身によるエレキ・ギター中心のアンサンブルの音が溶かされていく快感は他では得られない。 (湯浅学) --- 2004年01月号

ザッパの遺作「イエロ―シャーク」の程の緊張感はないが、しっかりとザッパ師に対する愛情が注がれた作品だと
思います。これを聴くたびにザッパが遺していった作品はどれをとっても後世に残りえる可能性に溢れた名曲ぞろい
だと確信し、アンサンブルモデルンには第二弾、第三弾とこのザッパ物の企画をつづけていただくこと期待したいです
