トールキンの『指輪物語』を原作とするピーター・ジャクソン監督の壮大な3部作も、これが最終章。映画史上――そして映画音楽史上――もっとも高い完成度を誇るシリーズのひとつが、本作によって完結する。

   前2作でやったように、作曲家ハワード・ショアは本作でもダークで成熟したオーケストラ・スコアの傑作をつくり上げた。繊細な雰囲気とニュアンスを大切にし、この30年ほどのメインストリームの冒険アクション映画が陥りがちな意味のない大仰さを避けた音楽である。中つ国をめぐる今回のスコアにおいて、ショアは極力ムダな音を排し、おなじみのテーマの数々をむやみにリピートさせず、ドラマを盛り上げることに専念している。先人にあたるバーナード・ハーマン同様、ショアはオーケストラの生み出すさまざまな音色を、そして、それらと人間の感情の間にある不思議な結び付きを知り尽くしているのだ。そんな見識を生かしつつ、ショアはワーグナー風のドラマティックな展開を見せるが、そこにはきわめてモダンで控えめな、彼ならではのメロディー・センスがある。

   要所では、ジェームズ・ゴールウェイとルネ・フレミングが、それぞれフルートとボーカルで参加。また、アニー・レノックスが歌うソウルフルな「Into the West」は、サントラにポップ・ソングを期待する傾向に対し、出しゃばらない程度に応えている。（Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com）

ご存知のとおり、映画「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング　王の帰還」のオリジナルサウンドトラックですが、通常版と違ってDVDがついています。
DVDに入っている、全シリーズの総集編のような予告は、それぞれの名シーンを観ることが出来るので、思わず涙が出そうになります。

DVDの中には他にも、ハワード・ショアたちによる音楽のメーキング映像が入っていますが、それよりもファンに嬉しいのは、やっぱり歌詞がすべて載っていることだと思います！通常版では見る事の出来ない、使用されている曲のすべての歌詞をDVDで見ることが出来るので、お得感がありますｖ

サウンドトラックの方の音楽は文句なしです！聴いているだけで映画のシーンを思い出すことが出来ます。最後の方は、涙なしには聴けないと思います。
また、ブックレットにも、ビリー・ボイドが歌った歌詞や、ヴィゴ・モーテンセンが歌った歌詞が載っているのも嬉しいです。

実質的な終曲（であろう）「すべての終わり」を聞くとよく分かりますが、音楽は派手さを増すどころか、むしろストイックなまでの厳粛さに絞り込まれていきます。このあたりは原作を読んだ方なら雰囲気がお分かりいただけるのではないかと思いますが、非常に清らかな、聖なる終わりを私たちに伝えてくれます。もちろんそこにいたるまでの音楽はこれまで以上に豊穣で私たちを十分満足させてくれます。少し難点を言えば、最終トラックに収録されている主題歌？（ユーリズミックス・・懐かしい・・のアニー・レノックスが歌う）が、最後を飾るにはややポピュラー寄りに軽すぎて、この盤の雰囲気にそぐわないかな、と思った程度です。

　最後から３番目のトラック、「王の帰還」は、原作どおりであれば、後日談の章となるはず。しっとりしたロンドン交響楽団の弦楽器の中、ヴィゴ・モーテンセンの朗唱（！）が遠く聞こえ、ジェームズ・ゴールウェイ（！）のフルートがエンヤの「メイ・イット・ビ」を静かになぞり、聴く私の心をさざめかせてくれました。３年前のクリスマスに英国で初めてこの映画・この音楽に出会って以来、魅せられ続けてきましたが、その私の心の旅ももうじき終わりのようです。感傷的なレビューになりましたが、最後まで質を落とさずに孤高の音楽を送り出してくれたハワード・ショアに感謝したいと思います。皆さんにお勧めします。

~ついに旅は「王の帰還」へと　たどり着きました。最後を飾るにふさわしい　ハワード・ショアの楽曲の数々。
荘厳な曲あり　清らかなフルートの調べあり　心安らぐコーラスありと　バラエティに富んでいます。

アラゴルン役のヴィゴ・モーテンセンも一部参加しています。やさしくそれでいて力を感じさせる　アニー・レノックス（元ユーリズミックス）の　ボーカルも最高です。
このサウンド・トラック盤を選ぶ人は　DVDが　気になっているでしょう。内容は「旅の仲間」「二つの塔」のダイジェストと

「王の帰還」の予告編が　連続6分30秒も楽しめるスーパー・トレーラーが　まず一つ。「王の帰還」は　劇場公開版と挿入シーンが一部違います。続いて　ハワード・ショアのメイキングビデオが楽しめます。最後に「王の帰還」のワンカット集です。
なおDVDは　リージョンフリーですので　再生は大丈夫です。これで　日本公開が　さらに待ち遠しくなりました。~
