レコードの時代は、輸入盤店でも、中古品店でも、なかなか手に入らなかったアルバム。僕にとっては、１曲目で、ロックでもジャズでもない、カンタベリー系ジャズロックって、『これかあ。　スゴイ！』と、大感激して以来、今日まで２０年以上聞き続けている、お宝的アルバム。
　BRYDEN 2 STEP PART1、
　BRYDEN 2 STEP PART2の盛り上がりと、

　BINOCULARSのフルート演奏と直後の盛り上がりの部分が特に気に入っています。
　昔は難しいなあと感じる部分の多かったこのアルバムも、今ではむしろ、『結構わかりやすいメロディで構成されているなあ』と感じます。
　このアルバムが聞きやすいと感じられる時代になったのですね~。

１曲目で、好き嫌いがはっきりすると思いますが、私は完全にはまりました。カンタベリー系、プログレの中で、私にはこれがベスト。大地震のときは、これだけはもって逃げたい、宝物です。しょっぱなの盛り上がりが、「トッポジージョ、トッポジージョ、ジージョ」って聞こえてしまうまで、繰り返し聞いて欲しい。私は１０年以上聞きっぱなしデス。他の２枚とビル・ブラフォードがドラムを担当した、「Missing Pieces」の全４枚は、必聴です！このアルバムが難しく感じられなくなった現代だからこそ、楽しみながら聴き込んで欲しい。

カンタベリー・ロックの中核を占めていたハットフィールド＆ザ・ノースは1975年に活動を休止。これを受け，構成員が兄弟バンド【ギルガメッシュ】と混じり合うような形で結成したのがナショナル・ヘルスだった。折からのパンク隆盛が逆風となり，メンバーは流動的で活動も安定せず，結局３枚を残して空中分解してしまう。

本盤はバンド名を冠したデビュー作に続き，1979年に発表された第二作。一作目をいっそうソリッドかつダークな色合いにしたプログレッシブなジャズ・ロックだ。確かに，彼らはテクニックこそジャズ屋には遠く及ばなかったが，ジャズとロックをこれ以上なく幸福に融合した，イマジネーション溢れる音楽性があった。本盤でも，ジャズとプログレの境界領域で独自の桃源郷を作り出す作風に大きな変化は無し。急速調ではギターを駆使した多彩な変拍子ロックの表情を，緩奏部ではエレピやオルガンを使ってメロウなCTIフュージョン風の表情を，それぞれ使い分け。予測不能な転調の連続と厚い管部のオブリガードを援用して，起伏を作っていく。大物ピンク・フロイドやイエスに隠れて目立たぬ侭なのが不思議でならないほど，楽曲は粒ぞろいで創造性豊かだ。

唯一物足りないところがあるとすれば，ハットフィールド＆ザ・ノースやナショヘル名義の第一作でも，桃源郷へのトリップ感を醸し出すのに大きく貢献していたアマンダ女史の神々しいお声が，本盤では全く入っていないことか。代わりに一部でヴォーカルを取るピーター・ブレヴァートは，トーキング・ヘッズのヴォーカルみたくぶっきらぼうで歌もヘタウマ。ヴォーカルのみの参加で，わざわざこんな人物を据える必要があったのか。正直言って意図が良く分らない（笑）。
