東儀秀樹初のベスト・アルバム、その名も『風と光の軌跡~BEST OF TOGISM』。96年のデビューから8年。その間にリリースされた12枚のアルバムと4枚のシングルのなかからの選曲だ。そのなかで「New ASIA」「追想」「越天楽~越天楽幻想曲」「聖家族」の4曲は再録音&リミックスして収録されているので、ただのベスト盤ではない。“西と東の融合、新と旧の融合”と本人が言うチャレンジ精神が見事に貫かれていることがわかるベスト・アルバムだ。本人のコメント・楽曲解説もブックレットに掲載されている。 (清水隆) --- 2004年01月号

東儀氏デビュー７年目、初ベストアルバムの謹賀新年リリースです。彼の最代表曲、Ｎｅｗ　ＡＳＩＡが序曲として収録されています。これを聴いて、改めて、彼の「完成」を感じた気がします。今までコンピアルバム、「Ｎｅｗ　ＡＳＩＡ」や、「Ｉ　ａｍ　ｗｉｔｈ　ｙｏｕ」ではバンド体制での曲でしたが、ここでは彼一人で演奏を手がけた本来のオリジナルの曲調を主軸にし、笙と龍笛を東儀九十九、雅美氏との合奏体制でのセッションといった感じに仕上がっています。その他、当曲を含め、新録音曲が４曲、中でも正月には欠かせない越天楽が収録されているのには、何か正月の雰囲気を出したかった私には嬉しい一曲でした。
この一枚で是非、風流を感じて下さい。

東儀秀樹の音楽は好きで、時折聴いていますが、本当に癒されますね。西洋の音楽１２音階にはない音、即ち西洋の記譜には書きにくい音符の連なりが、その癒しの根源を形作っているのでしょうか。

越天楽~越天楽幻想曲(日本古謡)のアレンジには感心しました。長男が雅楽をやっていましたので、越天楽の演奏には慣れ親しんでいるのですが、東儀秀樹の編曲は雅楽の楽器の持ち味をいかし、現代のテイストを加味した楽曲に仕上がっており、２１世紀の雅楽の進むべきあり方の一つを提示したように感じました。

「蒼き海の道」も良かったですね。東儀秀樹の最初のシングルでしたが、唐招提寺の壮大な伽藍とそれの持つ歴史をモティーフに描いた作品です。バックのオーケストラの雄大さに乗せて東儀秀樹の篳篥が朗々と奏でますので、とても印象深い曲でした。伝統音楽のエッセンスが現代に形を代えて流れていくような曲ですね。

12曲目の「光り降る音」は大好きな作品です。冒頭の笙の音は、まさしく「天から降り注ぐ光り」そのもので、とても印象に残る楽曲です。これはもともと『光り降る音』という絵本を、東儀秀樹が作成している時にインスピレーションで生まれた音楽だそうです。笙という世界にも類を見ない楽器の特性を十二分にいかしたものといえるでしょう。
西洋のオーケストレーションでは出せない雰囲気を持っています。壮大でたっぷりとした音楽は、多くの人に「癒し」を与えることと思います。

雅楽界のプリンス、東儀秀樹さんの初ベストです。
雅楽というと、伝統的で小難しい音楽という感じですが、ひたすら広がりのある美しい癒しサウンドが、繰り広げられています。
目を閉じて、笙や篳篥の音色に耳を傾けているとなんか優しい気持ちになれそう・・・。
もちろん、ベストなので楽曲的にも良いものぞろいですが、特に代表曲14は、アジアンテイスト満載で最高です。
まだTOGISM WORLDに触れたことのない方も、一度聴いて下さい。初めての方にこのベスト盤は、最適だと思います。
伝統音楽だとか肩肘をはらずに、素直に聴いてみましょう。
彼の音楽は、日本が世界に誇れる数少ない音楽だと思います。
