2004年トニー賞ノミネート作品です。
私はそのトニー賞授賞式の中継で初めてこの作品を知り、ミニレビューを観ましたが
一瞬にして感電してしまいました。
ここ数年のブロードウェイ作品の中でも久々のアタリ！という気がします。

“オペラ座の怪人”や“レ・ミゼラブル”といったロンドン産ミュージカルとは明らかに違う、まさにアメリカン・ミュージカルらしいポップなスコア。
Amazon.comの担当者レビューでは酷評されていますが、私はスティーブン・シュワルツのスコアはとてもよく出来た素晴らしいものだと思います。

このポップなスコアを歌う二人の主演女優、イディーナ・メンゼルとクリスティン・チェノウェスの歌唱力が凄いです。
特に緑の肌をした西の魔女エルファバを演じるイディーナのちょっとエキセントリックで力強い歌声には圧倒されて鳥肌が立ちました（彼女はこの役でトニー賞の主演女優賞を受賞）

また、良い魔女グリンダを演じるクリスティンの美しく響くクラシカルなソプラノも魅力的です。
一見、相性の合わなさそうなこの二人の歌声のデュエットが最高に聴かせます。
中でも"Defying Gravity"でイディーナが「誰だって自分を信じれば空を飛べるのよ、重力なんかものともせずに」と歌うシーンは圧巻です。

他に往年のミュージカル俳優ジョエル・グレイのコミカルな歌声、アンサンブルもよくまとまっていて
まさに一聴の価値あり！の1枚です。
スコアがそんなにミュージカルミュージカルしていないので
普通に洋楽ポップスとしても普段聴き出来るのではないでしょうか。

劇団四季が上演することでも話題になっているウィキッド。豪華絢爛のファンタジックな世界観は、比較的誰でも楽しめる、ある意味ミュージカルらしいミュージカルです。音楽的に、いわゆる名曲と呼ばれるような曲は第一幕に集中しているように思われます。どこか不吉な予感をもたらすような「 No One Mourns the Wicked 」から始まる一幕は、しかし多くの明るいナンバーで構成されています。エルファバが希望に満ちて歌う「Wizard and I 」グリンダ役のチェノウェスとエルファバ役のメンゼルの、それぞれに個性ある歌声が元気に響く「What Is This Feeling? 」実にミュージカルらしいダンスナンバーの「Dancing Through Life 」など…。しかし、その合間にも「Something Bad 」などの不穏なナンバーが入ります。そして、一幕をみごとに閉めるのが、エルファバとグリンダそれぞれの友情と決意に満ちた「Defying Gravity 」です。二幕はどちらかというと少し重たいストーリーが重視されており、それほど華やかなナンバーはありません。しかし、終わりに程近くなって歌われる「For Good」には胸を揺さぶられます。　作品全体に関して言えば、ミュージカルとして純粋に楽しめる名作品、ではあるのですが、ご鑑賞の前にぜひ「オズの魔法使い｣をご一読ください(笑)読んでいるのといないのとでは、作品の持つ意味がまったく変わってきてしまいますので…。

オーケストラがかなり迫力あります、あと大勢のコーラスの部分が結構あり、キレイです。顕著な例が"No one mourns the wicked"または"Dear old shiz"です。また、このCDはブロードウェイミュージカルにしてはちょっと少し変わっている曲の構成になっているように思います。一曲のベースのメロディーはもちろんあるものの、そこにまた別の２，３つのメロディーが付属する形の曲が多いように思われます。つまり３つの小川が一つの河川に集まって流れていく感じです。しかし、なんといっても注目すべきはidina Menzelの素晴らしい歌唱力。"The Wizard and I"は身の毛が立つようで、加えて彼女の声はどこかしっとりしていて心に染みます。また"I'm not that girl"等のバラードもすばらしくキレイです。またKristin ChenowethもIdinaとは全く別の魅力を感じさせてくれます。やはり有名な"Popular"他の曲でもクラシックの基礎から築いた彼女の歌唱力のすごさには驚きました。１番オススメなのが"One short day"。１番明るくてハッピーな元気な気分にさせてくれる曲えです。"What is this feeling"ではGalindaとElphabaの対立と困惑がが描かれていてきいていて面白いです。"Dancing through life"もNorbert Leo Butzの力強い、本当にイイ歌声で聞かせてくれると共に、NessaroseとBoqの二人の掛け合いの部分も心にグッときます。"Wonderful"ではオズの魔法使いのおちゃめな感じが全面に出ていてすごく楽しめます。この曲でJoel Greyはすごい、と思えます。"全曲が全曲すごいイイ曲！というわけではないですが、上記のようにイイ曲も多いです。
