渡辺貞夫というミュージシャンは、ジャンルを超えて様々な形で我々を楽しませてくれますが、このアルバムは私にとって特別な存在です。私が50-60年代のモダンジャズに聞き入っていた中学-高校時代、日本のミュージシャンがここまですばらしいパフォーマンスを発揮してくれることがことのほか嬉しかったことを思い出します。前作アイムオールドファッションではやや堅苦しい印象でしたが、ここでの彼はチャーリーパーカーに陶酔した時期のすべての思いを吐露しており、すばらしいサイドメンをバックに最高の演奏を展開したと思います。多少音程が外れてもほとんど気にならないほど印象に残るアドリブが、本当に素晴らしいです。もしアイムオールドファッションが気に入ったら是非聞いてほしいものです。カリフォルニアシャワーが好きな方で、彼の別の面を知りたい方にもお勧めします。XRCDのため価格が高いのですが、それだけの価値はあると思います。

渡辺貞夫の貢献は計り知れないが、日本のジャズを国際的水準に押し上げた先駆者であり、世界屈指のアルト・サックス奏者として君臨し続けている点であろう。この2点があれば、たとえその後フュージョンの世界で優れたアルバムをリリースしたことがなくても、それだけで歴史に名を残すプレイヤーだといえよう。このアルバムはそうしたアルト奏者としての優れた面を、心の師匠として尊敬するチャーリー・パーカーへのオマージュを通して遺憾なく発揮している。かつてFMで毎週楽しみにしたマイ・ディア・ライフでのスタジオライブでどれほどパーカーに傾倒したナベサダの節を聴いたことか。僕はこの中でもイフ・アイ・シュッド・ルーズ・ユーが好きだ。ハンク・モブレーもソウルステーションの中で演じているが、ナベサダの演奏には及ばない。バードの世界を現代に伝える名盤だ。
