このＣＤを購入される方の何割かは３曲目の「スター・トレックのテーマ」を聴きたい為に購入されると思います。そう、それはこの曲があの日テレの名物番組だった「アメリカ横断ウルトラクイズ」のテーマ曲のオリジナル音源だからです。残りの収録曲も８０年代の前半のまだアナログディスクの頃に新日本プロレスに登場していた外人レスラーのテーマ曲として使用されていました。ちなみにファーガソンの曲は昔の外人レスラーのテーマ曲によく使用されていました。

1976年発売当時（当然ＬＰの時代でしたが）、メイナード・ファーガソンの「ロッキーのテーマ」を聴いては元気をだしていたという思い出の曲です。あれから30年の月日が流れました。
その後、3曲目の「スター・トレックのテーマ」はクイズ番組のテーマに使われましたので広く知られるようになりましたが。

テノール歌手が高音を響かせて歌う姿に観客皆が聞き惚れるように、トランペットの超高音というのも人を感動させます。メイナード・ファーガソンの高音域への挑戦は、未知の可能性にのぞむ挑戦者のように輝いています。
冒頭の「ロッキーのテーマ」を久しぶりに聴きますと、映画でのロッキーの姿となぜかファーガソンの吹いている姿を思い出してしまいます。果敢に超高音へ挑戦するのはある種のスポーツのような爽やかさをもたらすのかもしれません。

昔「チェイス」というグループがいました。４本のトランペットによるハイノートの掛け合いで「黒い炎」という曲を演奏して一世を風靡したことがあります。ファーガソンはその師匠格ともいうべき存在で、トランペッターの憧れでした。なにしろ、艶やかで張りがあり輝かしい彼の音を真似したいということで、ファーガソン・モデルというマウスピースが発売されているくらいですから。

昨年、惜しくも78才で鬼籍に入られたわけですが、この48才当時の輝かしいばかりの演奏は永遠に聴く人の心を捉えることでしょう。

MFのTheme of Star Trekは、米国に着くと、最初に必ず聴く曲です。
そういう意味では、あまりにも記号化された曲なのですが、何度聴いてもあの導入に「あぁ、俺は昔TVで見てあこがれていた、米国と言う国に来ているんだ」と鼓舞されます。
お勧めです、是非、やってみてください。
まだ、自由の女神に行ったことがないので、機会があったら、是非そこでも聴いてみたいと思います。

MFの逝去、心より残念です、ご冥福をお祈りいたします。
