サイモンとガーファンクルの歌声を聴いていますと、当時ヒットしていた「ボクサー」を楽譜を見ながら覚えていた頃を思い出します。
1969年の頃です。日本ではちょうど関西フォークが台頭し、世間では大学紛争が激化していた時代でした。

世の中の喧騒をよそに、彼らの歌声は静かに当時の日本の若者に共感を与えていきました。透明感のあるデュエットを聴きますと、誰でもギターがあればコピーできるという親しみやすさを覚えたものです。

彼らの音楽は、静の音楽として捉えていました。「サウンド・オブ・サイレンス」しかり「スカボロー・フェア／詠唱」しかり。
アメリカ国内でヴェトナム戦争反対の嵐が吹く中、しっかりとしたメッセージを常に発信していたグループです。

楽曲の美しさは類を見ません。
「旧友」「ブックエンド」のどこか温もりのある穏やかさや、「アメリカ」での豊かなハーモニーなどは他のデュエットにはない個性のきらめきがあります。

「早く家へ帰りたい」や「59番街橋の歌（フィーリン・グルーヴィー）」、「アイ・アム・ア・ロック」などの初期の曲もシンプルな構成で好きですね。メロディの美しさは彼らの最大の特徴でもありました。それは「冬の散歩道」のような激しさを持った曲でも同様でした。

彼らの大ヒット曲となった「明日に架ける橋」や南米音楽への関心をもたらすようになった「コンドルは飛んで行く」など、1970年にも名曲を残していますが、その後突然解散したのも意外でした。

あの当時から月日が経ち、２人とも６５歳を越えました。偉大なデュオの歌声をＣＤで辿ることにします・・・。いいですね、本当に。

　学生の頃は本当に音楽に接することが多かった。みんな金がなかったから、貸しレコード屋で借りてカセットにダビングし、プレイヤーでそれを再生し、下手なアコギをひきながら口ずさんでいた。

　しかし、入社していくつもの責任を負い、それを全うしようと必死に働くうちに、いつしか音楽を聴かなくなってしまった。最近ＣＭでもありましたよね？　私だけじゃないでしょう。サイモンとガーファンクルは私の心のよりどころであったはずだが…。このＣＤの２枚目１５曲目に収められている｢ボクサー｣は凹んでいた時にはいつでもカンフル剤になってくれた。
　たまたまこのＣＤが新聞で宣伝され、私はもう本当に懐かしくなってしまった。Ｓ＆Ｇに対する思いだけでなく、学生時代の私が苦しんでいたとき、喜んでいたときをも。
　このＣＤは私にとっての所謂｢あの頃｣を忠実に再現してくれた。
　わかる人にはきっとわかりますよね？　あの頃…

若さで突っ走っていた20年近く前の学生の頃、カラオケで友だちがしみじみと歌い上げた「明日に架ける橋」がその後もずーっと胸の奥に残っていました。もちろん他にもＳ＆Ｇと言えば数々の名曲が…。ひさびさに聴きたくなってこの贅沢なＣＤに手を伸ばしましたが、やはりいいですね。喧騒の中でも彼らの歌声を聴くと、自分を取り戻せそうな。…とは大げさかもしれませんが、彼らの歌に魅力を感じながらも、まだＣＤをもっていない方はぜひどうぞ。ただ、「明日に架ける橋」は仕方が無いのでしょうが妙に音量のレベルが低いので、ウォークマンなどで聴く時はここだけボリュームの調整が必要なのがむなしいです。
