このアルバムの白眉はやはり「Walk on」でしょうね。
ミャンマーの活動家Aung san suu kyi氏（２００５年６月２８日現在、
未だに軍事政権により拘束中）に捧げられたこの曲は、
８０年代と９０年代を生き抜いてきたU2の、
もてる力の全てを結晶化したかのような高揚感にあふれています。

しかし、何故かベスト盤には未収録なので、
最新作で彼らのファンになった人たちには意外と知られていないかもしれません。
本アルバムの１〜５曲までの流れは本当にすばらしいので、
一度手にとって見てはいかがでしょうか？

日本盤のみのボーナストラック「The ground beneath her feet」も、
聞き過ごすには惜しい佳曲ですよ。

張り裂けそうな声で「なんて美しい日だ」と叫ぶボノ。
そこには皮肉などかけらもない。
ひたすら現実から目をそらさずに、我々の心に眠っている
正義を追い求める心に訴えかける意志の強さと、
優しい友情の投げかけに満ちている。
やっぱりロックに必要なのはこの情熱だ。
いくら陳腐だと言われようが、これほど古来から人の心を熱くさせる
要素はないんだから。

当時、某老舗音楽雑誌で酷評されていたが、
そういう評論家が、ロックの利点としての「情熱の見えやすさ」を
９０年代のU2のように、信用しきれていないのかなあ、と思ったことが
感慨深い。
そういうわかりやすさもアーティストの技術なんだけどねえ・・・

2000年発表、スタジオ録音の第10作目。ダブリン・フランス等複数のスタジオで録音。
プロデューサーはブライアン・イーノとダニエル・ラノアだがスティーブ・リリイホワイトの名も見える。『Beautiful Day』、『Walk On』、『Kite』にU2が長い実験的作品(『Achtung Baby』・『Zooropa』・『POP』)から回帰しつつあるのが感じられる。

『All that you can't leave behind』とはCDの表面に刻印された2人の姿なんだなと思う。
