1991年アイルランド、ダブリンとドイツ、ベルリンの複数のスタジオで録音。
益々冴えまくるボーノとエッジには言いたい事が山のようにある。特にこの頃、私生活で破綻を迎えたエッジには言いたい事や声にならない声が積もり積もっている。言えない言葉を固めてギターのリフにし、彼はこのアルバムに密かに封じ込めようとしている。

エッジのギターが全作品で一番冴えまくり、泣いている。そのギターにかぶせるようなボーノのボーカルも全アルバムで一番『泣いている』。

発売前からＵ２の音楽が全く違うものになっているという情報
が流れていたにも関わらず、実際に聴いたときにその変わり様
とカッコよさに驚かされました。

いわゆる３部作の幕開けを飾るという点でも欠かすことのでき
ないアルバムです。その上、代表的な楽曲（例えば、The Fly,
Even Better Than the Real Thing：One：Until the End of
the World 等々）が揃っているという点でも、オススメしたい
と思います。

『ヨシュア・トゥリー』で成層圏まで到達した熱い魂の滑空は、再びこの地上というカオスへ舞い降り、自ら火だるまとなって転げまわる道を選んだ。
彼らが、長い戦いの末に極めた頂をいとも簡単に降りてしまったことのインパクトは大きく、失望を隠せなかったファンも少なくなかった。
しかし彼らほど時代の中での自己の存在意義を強く意識し、その在りようそのものを商品価値として転化できたアーティストはいない。

このアルバムは、『ヨシュア・トゥリー』で獲得した、あらゆる価値観が崩壊した後の荒野にそびえる“孤高の愛”を切り裂いてしまい、その本質を鷲づかみにしようとする困難な作業の入り口であり、激しい血まみれの気迫から、息苦しくなるような圧迫感に支配されている。
前人未到の新たな峰へのチャレンジは、ボノの重く突き刺さるＬＯＶＥと、エッジの内省的なギターを武器にして、とにかく走り出してしまった。
