『少林サッカー』でブレイクしたチャウ・シンチー主演、冤罪で投獄される判事の姿を描く香港版「大岡越前」とも言える作品。理想は高いが金品につられやすく、冤罪を着せられ死刑を言い渡された裁判官・ロンシンは、無実を証明するために脱獄する。

東洋史ファンから見た視点ですと、考証が正しい刑具や官僚の汚職ぶりなどが楽しめてしまう作品です。
コメディと侮っていると首が飛んだり、胴体がぶっちぎられたり、結構残虐なので注意したほうがいいかと思います。

中国古典法廷劇のパロディとしてかなり楽しめます。ストーリーそのものもそうですが、二転三転する裁判もおもしろい。コテコテの中国時代劇です。

おっちゃんことンマンタがシンチーを「おじさん」呼ばわりしているのが最初分かりにくかったけど（実際に養子縁組？してるんですよね~）シンチーのギャグはいつもより視覚的で（でっかいリボンとか）笑わせてもらいました。悪い判事だったシンチーが、もっと本当の悪人を知ってから正義感に目覚め、必死で戦う姿が健気。嫌われ者だけど、見てるこっちにはなぜか憎めないキャラクターです。出演者も豪華でおなじみのチョンマンやクリスティーが可愛かった。特にチョンマンはこれほどか弱くて守ってあげたいようなか細い女性を演じるのは初めてなのでは？最後の終わり方もとってもハッピー☆"頑張れバウ判事！

原題の「九品芝麻官之白面包青天」にある「包青天」とは、北宋の実在の名裁判官・包拯のあだ名。鉄面無私にして昼は悪人を、夜は悪霊を裁くスーパー判事として伝説化し、「包公」として神様のように祀られ、日本でいう「大岡裁き(話の元ネタに包公もの有り)」のように講談や芝居の題材となり映画にもドラマにも取り上げられています。中国なら子供も知っているヒーローです。

シンチー演じる「包龍星」は、その包公の子孫という設定。物語の舞台は清朝です。
コメディながら考証は正確、中国法廷劇に主人公の挫折から強力な正義の弁舌の徒への変身を織り込み、快調に笑わせてくれます。その良く動く口と舌の凄さに見とれてしまいます。

あとは、同じく公案物の傑作古装片である「審死官」も日本で出してもらいたいものです。
