   ピーター・ジャクソン監督の『ロード・オブ・ザ・リング』3部作の最後を飾る「王の帰還」のサウンドトラック盤。スコアを手がけているのは、前2作に続いてハワード・ショア。これまで以上に暗く、不穏で、そしてメロディアスなスコアの数々が、登場人物たちの絶望的なまでの決意とかすかな希望を演出する。

   クラシック界からはサー・ジェームズ・ゴールドウェイやレネ・フレミングが、ポップス界からはアニー・レノックスがゲスト参加。さらにアラゴルン役のヴィゴ・モーテンセンが<17>「王の帰還」の一部で歌声を披露しているが、この部分の作曲は彼自身とのこと。作り手の作品への愛が随所に聴き取れるサントラと言えそうだ。（安川正吾）

やっぱりショアはすごい！迫力満点で映画の雰囲気そのまんまでてます！！やっぱりストーリーが鬼気迫っているので曲もそれなりに重いですが、映画のイメージを崩さずうまくできていると思います。あとはなんといっても役者陣の歌声（ﾟ▽ﾟ)♪ヴィゴも渋くてとてもいいのですが、個人的にビリー・ボイドの上手さにびっくり!!!映画でピピンが歌えと言われて歌いだしたとき、声のきれいさに鳥肌たちました。とにかく今回は歌もスコアも充実してててとっても満足です♪

ついに3作目か！とサウンドトラックでさえ実感させる感動ものです。音楽を聴くだけで場面が浮かび、涙さえでてきそう。17番の　the return of the king は　aragorn役のviggo mortensenによるメロディー付けと本人の歌が入ってます。日本版よりも格安だし、本当に買って良かった、といえる一枚です。

　実質的な終曲（であろう）「すべての終わり」を聞くとよく分かりますが、音楽は派手さを増すどころか、むしろストイックなまでの厳粛さに絞り込まれていきます。このあたりは原作を読んだ方なら雰囲気がお分かりいただけるのではないかと思いますが、非常に清らかな、聖なる終わりを私たちに伝えてくれます。もちろんそこにいたるまでの音楽はこれまで以上に豊穣で私たちを十分満足させてくれます。少し難点を言えば、最終トラックに収録されている主題歌？（ユーリズミックス・・懐かしい・・のアニー・レノックスが歌う）が、最後を飾るにはややポピュラー寄りに軽すぎて、この盤の雰囲気にそぐわないかな、と思った程度です。

　最後から３番目のトラック、「王の帰還」は、原作どおりであれば、後日談の章となるはず。しっとりしたロンドン交響楽団の弦楽器の中、ヴィゴ・モーテンセンの朗唱（！）が遠く聞こえ、ジェームズ・ゴールウェイ（！）のフルートがエンヤの「メイ・イット・ビ」を静かになぞり、聴く私の心をさざめかせてくれました。３年前のクリスマスに英国で初めてこの映画・この音楽に出会って以来、魅せられ続けてきましたが、その私の心の旅ももうじき終わりのようです。感傷的なレビューになりましたが、最後まで質を落とさずに孤高の音楽を送り出してくれたハワード・ショアに感謝したいと思います。皆さんにお勧めします。
