映画館で見たとき、なんて不器用な人ばっかでてる映画なのかと思った。この不器用さが台湾の退廃的な若者集団や東京の無機質空間にうまくはまっている。スーチーのかわいさと夕張の雪のきれいさ、それだけでもみたあと気分よくなれます。西洋人が描く東京とは違う、台湾人が描く東京と北海道はいいもんだと思った。

主演女優のスー・チーは、この作品がカンヌ映画祭で上映されたとき、自分の演技のふがいなさを見てショックを受けたそうだ。でもこの映画のスー・チーは、演技云々より、自分をコントロールしきれない女が持つ魅力を表現してるところがすごくいいんだけど。そんな彼女の回想形式のナレーションがよくて、中国語がわからないことが悔やまれる一方、わからないなりに魅力があって聞き入ってしまった。それと音楽とリー・ピンビンによる映像美。これら３つが作り出す映画の流れの素晴らしさを再確認したくて、たびたび見返したくなる映画です。

ホウ・シャオシェンは『憂鬱な楽園』、『フラワーズ・オブ・シャンハイ』を撮り、この作品で一気に若者の世界へとシフトしたようだけど、この映画は、その意気込みがかもし出しているのかもしれないあやうさと、大作家としてのゆるぎない確信が見事に同居する世紀の傑作です。この映画の魅力の根源は、スー・チーとガオ・ジェのキャラクターと、その関係を描いたこと。ガオ・ジェが住むマンションにスー・チーが泊まり、ガオ・ジェが朝ごはんをつくってくれるシーンは、本当に最高。あのマンションは、実際にガオ・ジェが自宅として住んでいたんじゃないか？と思ってしまう。

ヒロインと二人の男性との関わりや
何故荒廃した生活を続けるのかその背景をもう少し明確に描いて欲しかった。
この辺りが省略されているために
主人公の男女が単なる破滅願望から反社会的な生活に陶酔している様に映る。
台北や東京といった大都市に糜爛した空気があるのは事実だが、
社会規範に沿った生活を送る人々は確実に存在し、
またその様な人々が多数を占めるのだから、
背景や動機の見えないまま刹那的な生き方をする人物たちを見せられても
観客としては理解も共感も出来ない。

ヒロインがレトロな映画の街である夕張を訪れる場面は
その限りでは魅力ある描写だが、
他の場面との有機的な関連性が今一つ感じられない点も残念である。

また、劇中ではヒロインのスー・チーがやたらと煙草を吸う描写がある。
これには彼女の苛立ちや不安定な心のありようを示すと同時に
その姿から都市的な退廃を体現する意図があると推察される。
だが、女性の喫煙から都会的な退廃をイメージする発想そのものが
既に一時代前の感覚ではなかろうか。
