   ゲイでありながらライザ・ミネリと結婚していたこともあるオーストラリア人歌手、ピーター・アレン。彼が1992年にエイズで亡くなったとき、ゲイである事実は公式なかたちでは発表されないままだった。アレンの生涯はドラマ化するには厄介な題材だが、この伝記ミュージカルの主演者ヒュー・ジャックマンは、アレンのエネルギーと内なる葛藤を見事に伝えている。ただし、全編に散りばめられたアレンの曲はいかにも軟弱な感じで、彼の激しい生きざまを反映していない点が残念だ。

   技術的な面を見れば、ジャックマンは最高の歌手とは言えない。その点では、やはりブライアン・ストークス・ミッチェルがブロードウェイの帝王だ。しかし、それでもジャックマンのカリスマ性には否定しがたいものがある。たとえば、彼の歌う「I Go to Rio」にはよどみがないし、「I Still Call Australia Home」（このミュージカルの代名詞的なナンバー）もなかなかに感動的だ。ジュディ・ガーランド役のイザベル・キーティング、ライザ・ミネリ役のステファニー・J・ブロックは、それぞれのモデルを真似て歌っており、恐ろしいほどのソックリさんぶりである。概して言えば、このアルバムはアレンまたはジャックマンのディープなファン向けだろう。（Elisabeth Vincentelli, Amazon.com）

　２００４年９月でクローズなんだそうです，このミュージカル。８月に観てきましたが，大行列の人気。おばさんたちに大人気で，ヒューが肌を露出するたび，キャーキャー大変でした。
　忘れちゃいけないのが，彼の演技力，歌唱力，カリスマ性。彼の代役立てたって，成立するミュージカルではありません。

　最初の曲が鳴り始めるや，舞台にピアノが現れます。一旦暗転したと思ったら，次の瞬間にはヒューがピアノに向かっている！　聴く度その光景が思い出されて胸が熱くなります。

　これから観る方に・・・インペリアル・シアターの裏を，夕方６：３０頃通りかかったら，ヒューのサインもらったり写真一緒に撮ってもらったりできましたよ。出待ちはファンが多過ぎて可能性低いと思います。ファンを大切にする，ナイスガイです。

ヒュージャックマンの歌のうまさが引き立つサントラです。何度聞いてもその時々で、違った深みを感じられます。彼が本当に舞台が好きで、歌う事が好きで…という感情が聞いていてひしひしと伝わってきます。その彼の舞台の空間に、まるで吸い込まれるかのように聞き惚れてしまいます。（目をつぶれば舞台が浮かぶくらいに）本場ブロードウェイに行きたい！生で彼の美声を聞きたい！と強く思いました。それくらい強烈な印象が私には残りました。ヒュージャックマンを知らない人にも是非聞いて欲しいお勧めの一枚です。

・・・と叫んでしまいます＾＾；ヒュー・ジャックマン（ヒュー・グラントじゃないですからね！）の待望のブロードウェイ公演のＣＤです。とっても素直な声で、（時に素直すぎるほど）逆に新鮮です。「X-メン」であのニヒルなウルヴァリンを演じてる人と同一人物とは思えません。実際、ナンバーは冷静に聴くとちょっと古臭いんですが、ヒューが歌うとこういうミュージカルもいいなあ、って素直に思えちゃいます。こういうミュージカルが今も上演出来るなんてジャンルの広いブロードウェイならでは、なんでしょうね。日本でも観たいなあ（ＴＴ）
