家族構成は近年、従来の固定型と異なり、離婚・再婚などによる流動型に移行してきている。これはこの映画の舞台であるノルウェーだけでなく、日本を含め、多くの国で見られる傾向である。結婚は「両性の合意のみに基づいて成立」するものであるから、夫婦間の愛が壊れてしまった場合、実質のなくなった家族構成に法律で縛り付けられるよりも、新しい道をみつける自由が与えられているほうが、基本的人権は保障できる。
　家族構成が流動的になるにつれて、その夫婦間の関係だけでなく、その夫婦がそれまでに背負ってきた人間関係（たとえば子ども、前夫、前妻並びにその縁者など）が複雑になる。「家族構成が流動的な場合には、子どもはファーザー、ステップ・ファーザー、マザー、ステップマザーと保護者が増えて、全員で育てるようになっている」と聞いたこともあるが、実際にはこの映画にあるように、各人の理解と相互協力がなければ新しく構築した家族を維持していくことができなくなってしまうものなのだろう。
　それぞれの人間は理性と感情、長所と短所、愛される性質と失望させられる性質などのように様々な特質を持っており、その特質は時間や場所、そこに生じる人間関係などと複雑に絡み合って表出されるものであり、表出された特質は立場によって受け取り方が異なってくるものであるから、人生は予測どおりには進まない、まことに苦渋に満ちたものとなってしまうことも多い。しかしそれは理解したうえで、人は人とのつながりの中でしか生きていけないものであるから、やはり勇気を出して希望を求めて一足一足進んでいくことが必要である。この映画の結末では、きっと多くの鑑賞者が主人公シブの選択に温かい涙とエールを送ることだろう。
