音楽史上もっとも重要なバンドはビートルズだが、もっとも影響を与えたバンドではないと言う人もいるだろう。ビートルズから遅れること10年、ブラック・サバスがヘヴィ・メタルの掟を作った。ひとつ、気取った歌詞を書くな。ふたつ、音はダイナミックで、とにかくヘヴィであれ。サバスの与えたインパクトはまったく陰りを見せずに、今なお受け継がれている。元祖ヘヴィ・メタル・バンドの1970年デビュー・アルバムから、元祖の曲の最初の一音さけ聴けば、新しい時代があの時に到来したことがわかる。人はサバスを嘲笑したかもしれないが(そして確かに嘲笑した!)、奴らのことを止められなかった。『Black Box』には、1970年から1978年にレコーディングされた8枚のアルバムを収録。オリジナル・メンバーのトニー・アイオミ、ビル・ウォード、オジー・オズボーン、ギーザー・バトラーが在籍したアルバムをひとつに集めた、重量感のあるボックス・セットだ。4曲入りの楽しいが短い付録DVDを除くとボーナス・トラックはないが、迫力満点の80ページに及ぶブックレットを同梱している。『Never Say Die』の頃には、サバスの4人はいくぶん丸くなっているが、このボックスの半分以上には、永遠のインパクトを持ち続けるヘヴィ・メタルを代表する曲が並んでいる。

BOXの中身は各アルバムごとにオリジナルジャケットのデジパック仕様で、
4枚ずつ簡単なケースに入っています。（それがさらにBOXの中に入っている）
ブックレットは外側がベルベットのような手触りのハードカバーでしっかりした作り。

最後のページにDVDを挟み込むようになっています。（これが傷つきそうで問題アリ）
内容も当時の写真から、影響を受けたアーティストたちのコメントなども掲載されていて
ボリュームたっぷりです。
音質は最近のリマスターものは聴いたことがないのでなんとも評価できませんが、
リマスター前のものとでは、比べものになりません！

以前のものは薄いベールの後ろから聴こえてきている感じだったのですが、
各パートがクッキリ鮮明に聴こえ、最近発売のハードロック系のアルバムにも
全然負けていません。逆にサバスってこんなにヘビーだったっけ？と思うくらい。
これでこの値段は「買い！」でしょう。

キャッスル社のリマスター音源ではなく、ライノ社独自でリマスタリングをしています。結果として音のヌケが良くなり、さらに生々しくなっています。アイオミのピッキングの音も細かく再現されていて、ファンにはたまらないモノがあります。とはいえ、恐らくマスターそのものがナローレンジなために、素直にリマスタリングしただけだと（特に低い周波数に）限界があるのも事実かと。同じライノ社が手掛けたイエスのアルバムなどと比べると厳しいモノがありますが…。又、Vol.4の1曲目のエンディングはレコード盤のものに戻されています。
デジパックは中途半端なつくりでちょっと残念。オリジナルに付いていた写真ページなどは省略されています。ジャケマニアならキャッスル社のLPミニチュアBOXの方が良いかもしれません。ライノ社のリマスター再発は大体デジパック仕様で、オリジナルの質感再現にはあまり熱心ではありませんね。まあ、音質的には最高なので良しとしますが。
総じてオジーのサバスを聴くなら、一番にオススメ出来るアイテムと言えるでしょう。

紙ジャケリマスター盤８枚。
超豪華な装丁のブックレットと
BeatClubでの激レアライブ映像収録のDVD付き！？

さらに紙ジャケを４枚づつ収納するスリップケースと
そのスリップケースとブックレットを収納できる
これまた重厚な作りのボックス。

黒地に黒で印刷だなんてシブすぎます！
「不当に安い」としか言い様がありません（笑）

国内盤を買い集めるお金があるならこちらを買った方が
満足度は格段に高いと思いますよ。
（対訳は無いけど（笑）全ての歌詞がブックレットに収録されています）
