待望のデビュー・アルバム！Sonic Youth「Goo」のアルバム・ジャケからバンド名を頂戴したというこのバンド、その名の通りに初期はＵＳジャンク系影響下のノイズ・ロックをやっていましたが、キーボードを導入してから、そのサウンドがガラリと変化。そして、セカンド・シングルをリリースしたレーベルのオーナーを通じて「White Stripes」のジャックと出会い、彼とのコラボ・シングルをリリース。そして、このデビュー・アルバムでもプロデュースはジャックが手がけ、レコーディング・エンジニアはブレンダン・ベンソン、そしてミックスはデイヴ・フリードマンと、超豪華なメンツが関わっています。リリースはジャックの「Third Man」レーベルから、そしてサントラ用に「White Stripes」のカヴァーをレコーディング、ツアーも彼らと一緒に回るという、非常に友好な関係を築いています。しかしながら、サウンドの方は、Stripesのブルージー・ガレージとはかなり異なっていて、非常にフリーキーで、実験的要素の強い指向をもっています。ザラザラしたノイズ・ギター、弾みまくるファズ・ベース、突拍子もない鋭く切れ込む展開がスリリングなキーボードやムーグの電子音、そしてエキセントリックに変幻自在にはね回るクセ者ヴォーカルという、アート・パンク／ノー・ウェーヴの影響、さらには冷笑的なクールネスが感じれます。でもメロディ・ラインは非常にポップ！曲名が全て「色」の単語１つだけという所は、ちょっとふざけている様な気もしますが、しっかりと個々に歌詞はあるので、コレも実!!験精神の表れかもしれませんね。豪華なゲスト陣に負けることのない、素晴らしい個性を持ったアルバム。聞き応え充分な大傑作！

NYのアンダーグラウンドシーンが放つ究極のノーウェーブ。
シンセ、ベース、ドラムでギターは居ない。しかし、音の方はガキガキのブリブリなのだ。
あのホワイトストライプスのジャック・ホワイトのプロデュース、
マーキュリー・レヴのデイブ・フリッドマンがエンジニアという豪華な面子からも
そのサウンドの非凡さはわかる。

orangeから始まりgreyで終る全曲名を色で統一させてしまうのもダサいのかカッコいいのか…。
ダサいのかカッコいいのかを決めるのは人それぞれ。しかし、変態だということだけは言える。
