マシーン・ヘッドは本作で、過去と未来を見すえながら、これまでの蓄積を洗い直しているように見える。本作より以前は、スクラッチとサンプラーと目が回るようなディストーションを用いて、1994年のデビュー作『Burn My Eyes』にインスパイアされた激しいロックが詰まったアルバムを超えようと奮闘していた。しかし、本作の前半部のほとんどでは、初期にあった多面的なごった煮のメタルサウンドに立ち戻り、かつての燃えるスピリットを再発見しようとしているかのようだ。本作は攻撃的ではないとは決して言えないが――「Bite the Bullet」「Left Unfinished」はまさに恐るべきトラックだ――リスナーが期待していた劇的な革命性には欠けている。
ありがたいことに、続くトラックでは変化を見せている。「Days Turn Blue to Gray」は、破壊的なリフを繰り出すべきところを逆に静まり返らせ、バックに牧歌的なサウンドをはさんでいる。「All Falls Down」では、ごりごりのメタルサウンドからメランコリーなフォークへと趣きを変え、シンガーのロブ・フリンは奇妙にもINXSの「Need You Tonight」のようなソフトな魅力を見せながらも、不気味な息苦しさで迫ってくる。
そして、力強く語る「Wipe the Tears」とクラシック的なギターを多用した「Descend the Shades of Night」は、アルバムを見事に締めくくっている。マシーン・ヘッドは今もなお輝いていて、フリンは自分を捨てた生みの親について語りながら、その怒りを新たなレベルへと昇華している。フリンはもう終わったと思っていたリスナーは喜んでほしい。彼はまだ過去の人ではないのだ。（Dominic Wills, Amazon.co.uk）
