   アンダーワールドの10年間にわたる活動を総括した2枚組ベスト盤。4枚のアルバムからの代表曲を中心に、92年当時に別プロジェクトのレモン・インターラプト名義で出したシングル曲、オリジナル・アルバム未収録曲、サントラ盤のみに収録された曲など、レア・トラックもふんだんに盛り込んでいる。こうして年代順に聴いていくと、ニュー・ウェイヴから派生した彼らがプログレッシヴ・ハウスの時代を経て、やがて独自の音を築いていく道程が再認識できる。扇情的なダンス・ビートに、メランコリックなメロディーやカール・ハイドのポエティックなヴォーカルといったロック的要素を導入する、というスタイルだ。特に2枚目でその作風を確立させていくのだが、テクノでもロックでもない独創的な音にこそ、彼らの魅力がある。この日本盤のみ、PV5曲入りのDVDを付けたスペシャル・パッケージとなっている。（小山 守）

　 『 underworld 1992 - 2002 ： 日本限定盤 』 、標準が２枚組に対して、限定盤は３枚組です。　特典ディスクの内容はDVDドライバで見れるPV集です。　さすがに、ベスト盤と言うだけの事はあり選曲には、かなりのセンスを 感じますね。 特にディスク１は 、アルバム未収録の作品が多く 、そこらの商業色の強いベスト盤とは違って、格段に 力の入り方を 感じます。　このベストアルバムの最大の特徴が、国内未発売のシングルや、現在入手困難なナンバーを収録している点にあります。　例えば "Spikee" や前身 レモン・インターラプト 名義の "Big Mouth" 、そして映画のサウンドトラックにのみの "8Ball" などもあり、コアなファンも納得の逸品です、このアルバム。　しかも、時系列とはいえラストが "Two Months Off" というのも良いですね。
　日本独自の DVD もクオリティが高く、これだけでも十分楽しめる内容です。　とりあえずメニュー画面には 「エラー？バグ？？」 と驚きましたが。

しかし、もう10年経つんだなと実感してしまうこのタイトル。

Disk1は主にCD未収録トラックが中心。
「Big Mouth」、「Dirty」は後には「Dark & Long」、「Dirty Epic」の布石となるトラック。
「Mmm Skyscraper I Love You」は個人的には超レアバージョン（かなりダンサブルな音に仕上がっている本国イギリスでは実質上の1stシングル）を収録してほしかった。残念。
「Spikee」「Dark & Long (Dark Train)」ともリアルタイムで追いかけていないと聞いていない曲でありCDというフォーマットで正式に日本で発売されるのはおそらく初めてではないかと思うのでこれは嬉しい所。

Disk2はもう説明する必要がないと思うので、ここでは敢えて省かせていただきます。

3枚目のPV集は秀逸。
日本では（確か）PV集は未発表だっただけにこれはこれで嬉しい所。

ただ、もうちょっとひねりのある（TOMATOらしい）DVDの構成をしてほしかった。（日本版だけだからかもしれないけど）
DVD「everything everithing」を見てしまうと、どうしてもあのアートワークの方に目が行ってしまうので。

曲数が少ないと嘆く方もいるかもしれないが（特にDisk1）、これでももうCDの容量いっぱいいっぱいだし仕方のないことである。

10年。3人でスタートし、結果として2人となったが、いかに脱退したダレン・エマーソンというのがこのグループに大きな影響を与えたかというのは十分わかる。それにアンダーワールドというグループが世界に与えた衝撃というのも判る気がする。（同列で語られるとすれば、やはりケミカルブラザーズになるのだが）

ダンスビートをまた違う次元に持って行き、「ロック・ミーツ・テクノ」などと呼ばれる基を作った張本人たち。
明日はどっちだ？

Underworld MK2始動(1992)~A Hundred Days Off発表(2002)までの10年間のアンソロジー盤です。

Disc 1は、Dark & Long(1stアルバム 1曲目)の原曲ともいえるBig Mouthに始まり、
Dirty Epic, Dirty GuitarのオリジナルMixのDirty (Dirty Epic (Dirty Mix)としてDirty Epicシングル盤に収録)、
Underworldとして、レーベルを通して発表した初めてのシングルMmm Skyscraper I Love You、

発表から10年経っても古臭さを感じさせない名曲Rez(アルバム未収録)、
Rezに続いて発表された傑作Spikee(アルバム未収録)、
2002年のツアー中、多くの公演で披露された、緩いヴォーカルトラックDirty Epic、
映画Trainspottingで幻覚を見る場面で効果的に使用され、いつの時代もよくライヴで披露され続けているDark Train(アルバム未収録)

と、Underworldがクラブミュージックシーンで揺るぎない地位を確立した過程を楽しめます。

Disc 2は、Rezのヴォーカルver.的な位置のCowgirlから、Two Months Offまでヒット曲の連発です。
途中、8 Ballという、映画The Beachサントラ収録のアンビエントトラックを挿みます(アンビエント面でも優れた楽曲を書き続けているのがUnderworldの特徴。このアンソロジー盤も当初は2CD+アンビエントDiscの3CDの予定でした)。
Born Slippy Nuxxはアンソロジー用未発表Edit ver.(7分34秒)、
Push Upstairsはプロモ盤のみに収録されていたthe full length of it mix(6分9秒。長尺で、歌詞も違います)、

Moanerはシングルのみ収録のAlbum ver.(つまり実際にはアルバムには収録されなかった。10分22秒の長尺ver.)
と、隠れたレアver.も収録されています。

日本限定のDVDは、5曲入り(33分)で物足りない感じもしますが、
2CD盤との価格差分は十分楽しめます。
構成の理解に少し時間のかかる、TOMATOデザインのDVDメニューも面白い。
