イタリアの実験的なプログレバンド。女声ボーカルが加入し制作された77年の2作目。北欧神話が題材。前作のようなポップ性は消え、より前衛的になった。ピアノ、オルガンを中心としたキーボード音にソプラノが乗り、サウンドコラージュが散らばる。現代音楽の影響が強く、無調音楽・不協和音といった要素が目立つが、古典的なクラシックやオペラのような美しさも見せる。異常で突拍子もない曲展開や音が様々な光景を断片的に見せていき、不思議な夢を見ているような感覚に陥る。冷たく張りつめた空気、にじみ出す狂気と神秘性。女性ボーカルで実験的という点でオパス・アヴァントラに通じるものがある。さすがにオパス・アヴァントラのドネラさんには劣るが、この作品のジャクェリーネさんの歌声もなかなかのもの。JACULAに通じる不気味さ・怖さも感じるが、JACULAはB級ホラー的な表面的な怖さが目立つのに対し、PIERROT LUNAIREは現代音楽的な不安な旋律から生じてくるもっと本質的に怖い音である。イタリアらしいドラマチックさも感じられるのだが、それ以上にジャーマンロックっぽい印象を受けるかもしれない。
「愛の喜び」はマルティーニの「愛の喜び」をノイズコラージュや怪しいパーカッションなどで斬新にアレンジ。「うら若き母」は、ノリは良いが妙な浮遊感と異様な雰囲気を持っているオルガンロック。途中でちょっと出てくるチェンバロの旋律が強烈な印象を残す。「黒馬」は流麗なピアノで幕を開け、琴のような音の和風な部分と美しいソプラノが舞うヨーロピアンな部分とが交互に現れ、最後は神秘的なピアノ旋律をバックに女性の不気味な笑い声が響きわたる…という異様な展開に圧倒される。「私のあわれなイタリア人」は酔っぱらいが肩を組んで歌っているような下品な歌とロックが行き交い、台詞が入り、突然アコースティックな演奏にのせて女声がドイツ語で力強く歌い出す…不思議な世界。

自分の無知さから聴くことが出来ず、死ぬ前に一度は聴きたい作品だったが無事に聴けました。大変ありがたい。スタルテェッリのソロ作も同様に素晴らしいので、ぜひ。
