　DREAM THEATER史上最もHEAVYな作品である。ヒット曲ANOTHER DAYのポップともいえる優れたメロディをこよなく愛するリスナーにはかなりきつい作品だと思うが、ANOTHER DAYが収録されている2nd「IMAGES AND WORDS」にだってPULL ME UNDERというHEAVYな曲も収録されているし私には凄く自然に今作を受け入れることが出来た、というより今までの中で最も聴いていて興奮を憶えた。

　私が本作を気に入った理由はJohn Petrucciのエッジの効きまくったギターリフがかなりフューチャーされている事、スリリングなソロを弾きまくっている事である。またMETAL者である私が「オッ！」と思ったのが２曲目のTHIS DYING SOULの中間部に挿入されているMETALLICAのBLACKENEDだろう。

　そんなHEAVY&DARKな本作の中にも綺麗なバラードである５曲目VACANTの存在が光っているし、壮大なラスト曲IN THE NAME OF GODも収録されている事を忘れてはならないだろう。

　本作は７曲収録されているが、のっけから１０分そこそこの曲が４曲続くなど、時間が無いときはつまみ食いでピックアップして聴くのだが、その中には必ず２曲目があるのは、やはり最もMETALしているからである。また３曲目でのJames Labrieの歌唱は素晴らしい！
　２００２年３月に行われたMETALLICAのMASTER OF PUPPETSのカバーLIVEは本作と無関係なのだろうか？それとも、あのLIVEはMETALLICAに対し「目ェ覚ませよ！」とでも言っているのか？
　ま、とにかく本作品は紛れもない名盤に相応しいHEAVYMETAL作品だ。

間違いなくドリームシアターのアルバムの中で最もへヴィーでしょう。
キャッチーさの入る余地なんてこれっぽっちもありません（笑）
楽曲のダイナミックさは相変わらず。完璧に近い曲を連発しています。
今までのアルバムの中では、アウェイクに一番近いんじゃないかと思います。
イメージズ・アンド・ワーズ的なサウンドは影を潜めています。

個人的にはこっちの方が本来のシアターのサウンドではないかと思います。
他の数あるプログレバンドの追随を許さない、圧巻の一枚です！！

非常にノリノリの曲が満載でライブなんて最高なんじゃないかなーと思います。
４月の武道館も予約済みで非常に楽しみ♪
