数年前に観た作品です。
グラスゴーの貧民町街で暮らす少年が主人公の話で、希望がない日々の生活の中で少年の心の依り所になったものとは・・。結末があまりにも悲しく、観終わったあとはやりきれなさでいっぱいになってしまいましたが、今でも心に残って忘れられない作品です。イギリス映画独特の陰欝さが始終漂っています。しかし少なくとも私には不快な暗さではありませんでした。少年の繊細な心理描写が素晴らしい!

「モーヴァン」に引き続き、身近に死を体験しそれを秘めた主人公の物語だが、
環境の悪いエリアから出ることと、少年の友人の死の話がそれほどかみ合っているように思えない。
頭の弱い少年、不良少年たちに弄ばれている少女、サッカー選手崩れの酔っ払いの父親と、
あまりに登場人物に救いがなく、何か行動を起こすという場面もない。
やることは、ゴミ袋をたたいてネズミを探すくらい。
まずしい、不衛生と並び、住んでいる人間の心がすさんでしまう悪循環。
ラストになって、「やっと･･･」と思えるが、達成感もなくそれほど嬉しいという感情も起こらない。
この監督は、「ある死を秘めている心」と「救いのないエリアから逃げる」ことを、
映画製作のテーマにしているのでしょうか。
陰気なカラーの映画であることを認識したうえで、観た方がいいでしょう。

　暗い映画である。それはこの映画が人の生活、生き様に真剣に対峙しているからだ。
決して楽しいことばかりではない人生、それは大人も子供も一緒だ。誰しも心の傷をおおい隠して生きている。
リン・ラムジー監督は子供の目線で大人の世界を描き、それ以上に子供の残酷さを、そして時には生身の女性のしどけなさまでさりげなく描いてみせる。
　グラスゴーが舞台、そこで暮らす貧しい人々のことを描いてはいるが、そこには階級的視点もなければ、冷徹なリアリズムもない。
人々の生活への率直な眼差しがあるだけ、そして、それはベッドの温もりのようにほの暖かいのだ。

［蛇足］彼女が描く水の風景はある意味でタルコフスキー以上、水を単なる物質として捉えず生命の気配まで感じさせてくれる感性は素晴らしい。
