素っ裸のミジェットを街で走らせるPVなどのお下品感覚を通して、悪ガキどものアイドルに……それは一面で彼らの真実ではあるけれど、デリカシー皆無の悪ふざけバンドで片づけるのは明らかにコトの真相を見落としている。BLINK182を当代随一のアリーナ・パンクスに押し上げた原動力は、悪ふざけの元気と同じくらいの強さで彼らのなかに根を張った悶々とした想い。そして、そこから生まれる共感と励ましの言葉だ。あのナイーヴなメロディのヒット曲を生み出した力の源もそこだろう。いわばポップ・パンクの領袖が2年半ぶりに放つ本作は、その繊細な感性にこれまで以上に真っ向対面し、凝ったアレンジで複雑な感性を描き出す。ロバート・スミス(キュアー)なんて意外なゲストも話題。凝り具合いのわりに曲が淡泊に感じられるところが過渡期を感じさせもするものの、メロディやアレンジがどんどん80年代末ころのブリット・ポッパーに似てきているのが面白い。 (平野和祥) --- 2003年12月号
