もともと「ＡＤＧＣ」の４音で書かれているチェロの曲を「ＧＤＡＥ］のベースに移調してピッチカートだけで演奏を試みたことは評価に値するでしょう。「ジャズ」「クラシック」と住み分けされた分野を超えての挑戦も注目すべきでしょう。しかし、クラシックしか聴かない人には理解できないかもしれません。あくまでも「ジャズ」の分野としての「試み」として聴くべきです。

一時期、異分野交流のようなものが巷をにぎわせたことがあった。ジャズプレイヤーがクラシックを演奏し、クラシックの演奏家がジャズ「など」を演奏する。愚生にはいずれも中途半端な余興にしか聞こえず、これらの試みは非常な困難を伴うのだと思い知らされたことを覚えている。
さて、本作品は一見それらと同じ類であると判断できる。言うなれば、いわゆる「ジャズ」におけるバスの名手が、いわゆる「クラシック」の名作に取り組んだ意欲作ということになるが、そのようなものでは決してない。ただし、クラシックでもジャズでもない。では何であるのか？あえて誤解を覚悟で言えば、「音楽」でしかない。刹那的な、そのときの感情の表現手段としての音楽の演奏者が、譜面という媒体を自らの感情の表現手段として用いる音楽を演奏するということ。その最大公約数がこの作品である言い切ってもよい。すなわち、前述したように「音楽」である。無論、演奏者がこんなことを考えてこの作品を作ったとは思えないが、本作品からは、演奏者の作曲者に対する畏怖の念と音楽に対するひたむきさが伝わってくる。それは、ジャンルなどというちっぽけな仕分けを超えた音楽における意思伝達ではないだろうか？おそらく、クラシック好きからもジャズファンからもそっぽを向かれると思います。それだけ重みのある作品だから。アンナ・ビルスマが「バッハは唄う音楽ではない。語る音楽である」と言ったが、本作品はまさしくそれを体現している。非常に評価されることの無い作品のようですが、是非お聴きください。お勧めです。

2.0 out of 5 stars 果たしてロンがこれをリリースする意味はあったのだろうか？, 2008/5/22
preludeも allemande も sarabandeも入っていない無伴奏チェロ組曲を
どう評価すれば良いのか？収録されているのは比較的難易度の低い曲で
占められている。どこかロンの「逃げ」を感じてしまうのは私だけであろうか。
バッハの無伴奏曲にはオルガン的なスピリットが底流に流れていることを期待するのであるが、
ポリフォニックな響きが聴こえてこない。それはピチカートという奏法を選択したことに問題が
有るのではないと思う。ジャズベーシストがバッハを奏することにも全く異存はない。
しかし、ここにはいつものリズム感の魔術師のようなロンの姿も無い。
一言で言えば、あまり面白いものではなかったということである。
彼をジャズベース界五大巨人の一人と認める私であるが、やはり人には誰しも
向き不向きはある。自己をきちんとプロデュースするセンスも頂点に立つマエストロには
不可欠であると思う。
