カラヤンが自分の死を予期していてこの曲を録音したのかどうかは、今となっては分かりません。この曲の第２楽章はブルックナーが尊敬していたワーグナーへの葬送行進曲になっています。それを意識して録音したのか・・・。この録音の後のカラヤンの辞任と、そのすぐあとの死を考えると、そんな勝手なことを想像してしまう、非常に美しく、どこか悲しさと諦念感を感じる演奏です。

カラヤンは最初期のはつらつたる演奏と、最晩年の諦観しきった演奏（ある意味両極端だけどね）が特に感銘をうける。
「カラヤンの演奏は響きは美しいが、中身が薄っぺらで聞くに堪えない」と思っているアンチ・カラヤンのリスナーにこそこの演奏をオススメしたい。

ブルックナーは好きじゃないし、カラヤンとＶＰＯも、晩年のチャイコフスキーではオケにナメきられてるんじゃないか？と思うような惨憺たる（と私は思ったのですが）録音で、本来なら全く聴くことはなかったはずの一枚でしたが、この盤の録音の直前のライブで感動的な名演奏だったと何かで読んで、かつカラヤン最後の録音ということで、ダメモトで買ってみましたが・・
結果、何度も繰り返し聴いています。
壮年の頃の、絶妙なオーケストラコントロールで完璧（それゆえ嫌われる？）な演奏をするカラヤンが私は結構好きでしたが、それとは違った味わいの深い一枚となりました。
あるいはカラヤン自身よりもオケの方が、彼の最期を予期して真剣で熱のこもった演奏になったのかもしれません。当時のＶＰＯのメンバーの感想を聞いてみたいところです。
