モノラル時代の定番ギーゼキングや、個性派フランソワなどの録音に続く新世代の録音として、当時まだ20代だったロジェが世に問うたラヴェルのピアノ曲全集です。クリアな音色、落ち着いた表現、オーソドックスな音質の録音で、リファレンス的な演奏として長らくカタログに載り続けている１組です。近年ではヒューイットやタローなどの優秀な新録音が現れ、やや陰が薄くなりつつありますが（ロジェ本人による再録音も期待したいところ）、まだまだ輝きを失っていない、誰にでも安心してお薦めできる優れた１組だと思います。

ラベルのピアノ作品の全集としては、ペルルミュテールの録音がほぼ同じ時期に成されていて評価も高いと思われますが、ロジェのこの録音もそれに劣らずラベルの精緻な世界を表現していると思いました。録音時期が1973年から1974年なので、音のクリアさが今ひとつです。その分星を一つマイナスしました（だからロジェの責任ではなく、ハードウェア的な問題）。是非本人による再録音化を望みます。

このディスクのライナーノートによると、「ラヴェルはロマン派の作曲家である」と若き日のピアニスト・ロジェは解釈している。妥当な意見であると思うし、少なくとも実際の演奏においてロジェはそれをきちんと表現し切っている。もっとも、ロジェのロマンは汗臭い熱血漢のそれではない。あくまでクールにキメたコンサートピアニストとしてのロマンである。

羽が舞うように軽やかな「クープランの墓」。端正な和声の刻みが舞曲としての古風さを鮮明に表出する、静かな哀しみに満ちた「亡き王女の為のパヴァーヌ」。寸分の贅肉も持たない屈強の悪魔の彫像を思わせる、冷たい唯美主義の結晶「夜のガスパール」。

どの曲にも、若きロジェの爽やかさと老獪さが垣間見える。秀演だ。
