   このCD2枚組（限定仕様盤にはDVDも付く）は、すでに定盤となっている『Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975』と『The Eagles Greatest Hits, Vol. 2』では物足らず、ボックス・セット『Selected Works: 1972-1999』では持て余してしまうというファンのためのコンパクトなオプションだ。ここには大型および中型のヒット・シングルが並べられているが、「One of These Nights」や「Hotel California」を始めとして、多くの曲は今も威厳があり、タフさすら感じさせる。

   人気アルバムからのカットも多く、来たる2004年のイーグルス再結成アルバムから1曲をひと足早く収録。9.11のテロに対するドン・ヘンリーの応答とも言えそうな「Hole in the World」がそれだが、残念なことに、バンドが過去に発表した無味乾燥なメッセージ・ソング「Get Over It」と同じぐらい内容は空疎でもったいぶっている（新曲の方はぐっと哲学臭が強くなっているという違いがあるとはいえ）。

   とはいえ、この南カリフォルニアの大御所バンドの業績を概観し、気の利いたデザインのブックレットに収録されたメンバーたちのコメント（そのほとんどはヘンリーとグレン・フライのもの）を読んでみたいファンには、期待以上の満足感を与えてくれるコレクションだ。（Rickey Wright, Amazon.com）

CD２枚、大好きな"Take it easy"から軽快にスタートする３３曲。選曲に関しては全く言う事ありません。当然ながら70年代のオリジナル･アルバム６枚からの代表曲を中心とする構成。過去に６枚全てをon timeで聴いてきましたが、今振り返ってみて記憶、印象に残っているナンバーが漏れることなくピックアップされています。
彼等の代名詞ともなっている"Hotel California"（私的には彼らの代名詞は"Take it easy"ですが）だけでなく初期の"Witchy woman"、"Desperado"、初のNo.1アルバム"On of these days"からのカット曲の数々、どれも忘れる事のない名曲です。

あのEaglesがCD２枚にまとまってしまう事自体、正直言って寂しい気持ちにもなってしまいますが、彼等の優れた音楽性と誠実さがこういった形で低価格かつコンパクトにまとめられ、幅広いロックファンに理解されることは素晴らしいことだと思います。

また､今回はかなり丁寧な内容のリーフレットが添付されており、メンバー自身のよって曲作りの背景や経緯なども語られています。これがなかなか興味深く価値あるおまけとなっています。
おまけといえば今回の新曲"Hole in the world"のDVD版がついていますが、まぁこれはあくまでおまけはおまけといった程度かな。

秋にはニューアルバムが出るような話があったので、結局「ホール・イン・ザ・ワールド」のみがニューマテリアルのベストアルバムしか出なかったのが残念です。Hell Freezes Overに含まれた新曲4曲が、グループというよりソロ作品を持ち寄ったような作品（Get Over Itを除く）ばかりで、出来も彼らの水準からすると今一歩。今回の「ホール・イン・ザ・ワールド」も彼らの持ち味であるハーモニーを前面に出したバラードではありますが、曲自体の出来は全盛期に遠く及ばない内容です。今回のベストアルバムの発表でいよいよ彼らを、完全に過去のグループと認識できそうです。ドン・ヘンリーはソロでいい作品をまだまだ発表できると思うので、さっさとグループ活動をやめてソロ活動に専念して欲しいものです。このアルバムはいい曲ばかりなので、彼らの作品をすべて買いそろえることを考えてない方にはうってつけの内容です。

装丁・・白を基調に。スリップケース。表はエンボス加工。全体的な印象としては「One　Of　The　se　Nights」と「Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975」を足して二で割った感じ。オフィシャル・サイト経由のＣＤは別仕様の模様。でも日本盤も十分満足出来るレベル。所有する喜びはある。

音質・・2000年BOX、リマスター盤と同音源だとは思うが、個人的にはＣＤの方が好き。何だか迫力があると言うか・・。BOXはライブ盤以外はいらないのではないか？という満足。

何と言ってもブックレットが目玉。今までなかなか分からなかったイーグルスの、主にドンとグレンの曲作りの過程を垣間見ることが出来る。しかもドンとグレンの言葉でだ。それと、脱退したメンバーの事にも触れており好感触。「Hotel California」、「The Last Resort」の意味が知りたければこれを読め。カラー写真充実で、ファンは必須アイテムであろう。

総論・・私も本ＣＤこそ''Very Best Of The EAGLES''であると断言する。移籍問題の絡んだ裁判の対抗手段として再結成後、亜種のベスト盤が出されたが、それらとは明らかに一線を画する。ドン・グレン監修と言うのも理由だ。今後は迷わずこのベスト盤が選ばれるだろう・・・
