前作Brother to Brother を最後にA&Mを去り、ARISTAに移籍しての第一弾アルバム。基本的には前作を踏襲し、フュージョンとロックを融合させ、かつポップにまとめあげた作品だが、前作よりもシンセの比重が増え（ポリフォニックシンセが出てきた頃なので）、ストリングスがゴージャスにフィーチャーされ、分厚いサウンドになっている。

夜の街の雑踏の音から静かに始まるタイトル曲Night Walkerで幕を開け、ドラマーなら知らないとモグリとも言われる壮絶なリズムのSeek and you will findに続き、最初からグイグイとジノワールドに引き込まれる。
3曲目は初来日公演のアンコールでも披露してくれたバラードPut the weight on my shouldersで少し力を抜き（それでも後半は盛り上がるのだが）、ジノとしては珍しく明るめのI believe、またも強力なリズムのSanta Rosaと続く。強烈なキメ、ユニゾンの嵐。

そしてその後に、I just wanna stopと並ぶ、ジノの名曲Living inside myselfが切々と歌われる。転調を繰り返すかなり高度な曲ながら、ジノが歌うとそんなことを感じさせないほど自然である。

その余韻の後、もう一曲ダンサブルな曲Stay with meが用意されている。兄ジョーのエレピのテンションバリバリのコードのバッキングがかっこいい。前回のジャズバンドでの来日時には違ったアレンジで聞かせてくれた。
アルバム最後は美しいバラードSallyで締めくくられる。

実はARISTAとはもう一枚アルバムの契約があり、先行シングル（The longer you wait）まで発売されていたのだが、アルバム自体は発売には至らなかった。そのトラブルが元でアメリカの音楽界のドンの逆鱗に触れ、大変だったらしい。

次回作（Black Cars）を聞くと、ジノがもっとデジタルでソリッドなサウンドを指向していたのがわかるが、このNight Walkerの延長線上の幻のアルバム（ちなみに題名はTwisted Heart）も聞いてみたかったものだ。

今回デジタルリマスターされての発売らしいので少しでも多くの人にこの名作を聞いてほしいと思います。

前作に比して大分音が電子化されてきた中、アプローチもプログレ
的な角張りからややポップス的なまろやかさを持った形になったな
という印象を受けた作品。
しかし中身は相変わらずのてんこ盛り。唯聴かせたいことを前作に
比してすっきりとまとめているようにも思え、各プレーヤーのスー
パープレイがあるにも関わらず変に耳を奪われることなく通して聴
きやすいようにも思う。
もちろんDrumを練習していた当時の私は、このレコードをヘッドフ
ォンで聴きながら練習パッドをたたきまくったのは言うまでもない。
このレコードも激しい曲に耳を奪われ勝ちだが、Put The Weight...
等のGinoのバラードヴォーカルは心を揺すぶられるものがある。
本当にっ。

　カナダ出身。70年に別名でデビューするが売れず、73年にハーブ・アルパートに見いだされ、「Crazy Life」で再デビュー。AORという範疇には押し込みがたい、ダイナミックな作りが特徴だ。プログレッシブな音づくりとリズムアレンジで、一部の音楽マニアに好評を博していたが、アルバム「Brother to Brother」とシングルヒット「I Just Wanna Stop」（聞いたことあるでしょ）でブレイクした。そのジノが３年振りに出したアルバムが、このナイトウォーカーだ。アレンジの秀逸さ、サウンドの新しさが多くの注目を集め、シングル「Living Inside Myself」もヒットした。当時の音楽業界に与えた影響は大きく、松田聖子もまるまるパクっている。

　歌モノにしては、かなり演奏がハードだ。ドラムのヴィニー（当時はビンス、ビンセントと表記されていた）・カリウタのドラムがすごい。素晴らしいアレンジ力だ。ちょっと聞く分には大したこと無いようだが、じっくり解析すると非常に難しいことをやっている。それをそう聞かせないのもヴィニーならではである。よって、このアルバムはドラマガなどの名盤紹介や、有名ドラマーのフェイバリットアルバム紹介における常連である。ドラマーは必聴であろう。ジノ自身もドラマーだったことがあるそうで、ヴィニーはこのレコーディングで抑えめな演奏をすると、もっと叩けと指示されたとインタービューの中で語っていた。

　しかし、アルバムのセールスは芳しくなく、次のアルバムまで４年もかかった上に、音楽性もただのポップへと方向転換してしまった。

　ジノの最高傑作を聞いてみて。
