   TMGE にPre-school、立て続けにオンリーワンなバンドが活動をストップした2003年。バンドはどう闘っていくのか？ これまで以上に重い命題を抱えるなかで彼らはこの年、結成15年目を迎えた。

   the pillowsは、これまでもブリットポップやUSオルタナなどのムーブメントを、同時並行輸入というよりは、自分たち（特にフロントマンの山中さわお）のタイム感で昇華してきたバンドだ。このアルバムでも良質なロックンロールバンドの名作がそうであるように、一定の楽器でどれも同じ質感のギターサウンドがさりげなく全編を貫通している。やってそうでやってなかった王道ブリティッシュビートな「TERMINAL HEAVEN‘S ROCK」、続けていくことの痛みと前進を感じさせる「昇らない太陽」などかけがえのない11曲がそろう。（石角友香）

結成15年目に放ったアルバムだが、いい意味でそれを感じさせないフレッシュな音だ。吉田仁のプロデュースも堂に入って、60~90年代を吸収して絶妙に今の日本語のギター・ロックにしたような輝きもあり、切なく甘酸っぱい起承転結の構成で一気に聴かせる。

ピロウズって低迷期が長くて、『ロストマン』で新しい世界を作れた。それが『ハッピービバーク』あたりで一通り完成してベストを出した。完成はしたんだけどピロウズのやることは「ビートルズみたいにいい曲をいい演奏で作ってライブをやること」だから完成してからも解散せずにいい曲を作り続けた、それが『３Ｑ』やキリスト教的世界観を入れた『スマイル』だったんだけど、「ちょっと違う方向に行くのも考えてみよう」って感じで原点のギターバンドに戻りつつも新しい道を模索して作ったのが『ペナルティーライフ』だと思う。「新しい道へ進むけどロックはやめないぜ」っていう自戒を含めた意味で「無期懲役」という題名にしたんだと思う。それで『ペナルティーライフ』で見つけた新しい道を「夢」というキーワードで作ったのが『グッドドリームス』という感じがするのです。
この『ペナルティーライフ』はロックをやる、という基本的な線は守りつつ、別の道を色々探しながら作ったので、1曲1曲がばらばらで、アルバムとしては統一感に少し欠けますが、それでも「新しいピロウズ」という意味で楽しめるのではないでしょうか

またまたやってくれました！！って感じのアルバムです。ほんとに全曲カッコいいし、初めて聴く方でもスムーズに馴染めるのではないでしょうか？

前作のサンキューマイトワイライトも最高傑作と思ったけど、そこで止ることなくどんどんカッコいい曲を作り出してくれる彼らの勢いは、ほんとに凄まじいです。何年か前に、「頂上なんてないんだ~♪」と歌っていたけど、まさにその通りです。

俺はピロウズ、ナンバガを通過して現在パンクと呼ばれるジャンルを聴き漁っている。その中でもグラインドコアやオールドスクールハードコア、激情系スクリーモが主食だ

「ポップなものはクソ」と一蹴されるような戦々恐々としたジャンルを聴き、痺れたりがっかりしたりを繰り返す音楽生活が成り立っているのだけど、さっき改めてピロウズのアルバムを聴き返して
やはりピロウズはいいバンドなんだと実感した
Thank you my〜を聴いたときは涙が出そうになった

そしてもちろんこのアルバムも聴いたのだけれども、正直なところ「?」と思うような感想しか書けそうにない

ピロウズの全部のアルバムに言えることだが、歌詞はいい。メッセージがさわおのフィルターを通され、独自の世界観を構築している。これはピロウズファンを自称する人なら誰でも頷くだろう

俺が気になったところは音にある。
何というか、激しいけど個性がないと言うか……
無難というか

俺はピロウズに暴れてくれることを期待している。ラスト・ダイナソーやその未来は今を聴けばわかると思うが、さわおの暴れかたには光るセンスがある。オルタナティブなピロウズは本当にポップでかっこいい
それが雲隠れしてしまったこのアルバムはそう聴き返すことはないだろう。(そう思っているのならオルタナティブな曲を聴いていればいいだけの話だが)

つまり俺の言いたいことは、店にピロウズのアルバムがこれしか無かったからといって、それをレジに運ぶのはちょっと待ってほしい。ということです

これは個人的にではあるが、初心者に薦められるアルバムではない。できるならばベスト、ハッピービバーク、Thank you my〜を最初に買ってほしい。そして一日中聴いてほしい
