   上品な演奏、力強いが決して大げさになることのないヴォーカルを追求するマクブライドの流儀は、本作『Martina』でも変わらない。「This One’s For The Girls」は、メアリー・チェイピン・カーペンターあたりが見落としているものをじっくりと掘り下げたトラック。反対に、「In My Daughter’s Eyes」や「So Magical」といったチューン（田舎の幸福な暮らしを描いたもの）は、マクブライドの考え抜かれたパフォーマンスのおかげで、「泣ける音楽」の枠を踏み外すことがなく、安心して聴いていられる。「When You Love Me」や「Learning To Fall」のようなポップ・チューンでも、ギター、フィドル、それに甘ったるいシンセサイザーにかぶさるスティール・ギターが強調され、カントリーとしての体裁はキープされている。

３人の娘さんがいる母親には見えない若々しく美しいマルティナは、このアルバム・リリース時はすでに37歳でしたね。

アルバム『MARTINA』は、前作2001年リリースのべスト盤後の初アルバムということで、マルティナの魅力が一杯詰まった最高のアルバムに仕上げっています。

彼女の力強いソプラノはカントリー界のセリーヌ・ディロンと言われたこともあり、単なるカントリーの枠だけに収めるのはもったいないぐらいの美声でファンを魅了し続けている。

誰もが認めているように、フェイス・ヒルやシャナイア・トゥエインよりは歌唱力でははるかにワンランク上でしょう。比較することは馬鹿げているとしか言いようがないぐらいのシンガーです。私自身毎日のようにカントリー・チャンネルを見ているが、絶対にマルティナが一番です。彼女のファンの方はカントリー音楽をよくわかっているよ。

このアルバムでは、“This One's For The Girl's”“In My Doughter's Eyes”の2曲は特にヒットしましたね。最後の“Over The Rainbow”はご存知のようにアメリカ人なら知らない人がいないぐらいのスタンダードで、カンサス州出身であればこの歌に対する思いはより強いはずです。この曲は女性シンガーにとってはジャンルを超えて一度は歌いたい名曲なんです。

そして、アルバム全体としては、ビルボード100で最高7位、カントリーとしては堂々の1位となったダブル・プラチナアルバムです。

前作は、どちらかというとかなりポップスだったが,今回はカントリーのスタンスを残しつつも、ポップスとの融合が絶妙。さらに、素晴らしいのは彼女のボーカル。圧倒的な歌唱力、声量にも関わらず大げさにならない。いわゆる、「歌唱力自慢」のようなイヤミったらしい歌い方ではないので、聴いていて、とても心地よい。そして、見事な表現力は聴くものを魅了する。日本では無名に近いが、アメリカでは、フェイス・ヒルやシャナイア、ディクシーなどと肩を並べる人気ぶり。ｏｖｅｒ　ｔｈｅ　ｒａｉｎｂｏｗのライブバージョンは、圧巻としかいいようがない。鳥肌もの。ハズレなし！絶品の１枚。

やっぱりカントリーソングは良いね。特にこのMARTINAはとても聞きやすく、カントリー音楽を聴きたい人にとっては、何の抵抗も無く受け入れられると思います。
歌の背後にある情景や、詩の意味、空気などを心で感じる事が出来るし、そう思う事で、アメリカに行きたくなってきます。それほど情景や風、におい、雰囲気を感じ取れます。
