ザ・ストロークスのセカンド・アルバムとなる本作ほど期待という名の重圧がズッシリとのしかかった作品はめずらしい。異常なまでの注目を浴びて登場するこの『Room On Fire』では、バンドの抱えこんだジレンマが白日の下にさらされる――彼らは前作『Is This It』のような簡潔なアルバムをもう1枚つくるべきか？ 前作の勝因となったしなやかなスタイルをフルに発揮しつつ、マンネリ化を避けることはできるのか？ そして、ジュリアン・カサブランカスが目指しているものは「醒めたサウンド」であることが周知の事実となった今、彼は我々の予想を心地よく裏切ってくれるだろうか？ 結論を言えば、本作は大傑作ではないが、無視できない魅力を持つアルバムであることは間違いない。豊かな才能に恵まれた5人のメンバーたちが、次に何をやるべきか頭を悩ませつつ生み出した作品なのだ。
「You Talk Way Too Much」のような誇大妄想的でレトロな曲は、本作の最悪の部分と言える。彼らは同路線の緻密で魅力的なサウンドをすでに手がけているわけで、どうしても新鮮味のない展開になってしまう。しかしカサブランカスは、バンドを新しい建設的な方向へと少しずつ引っぱっていく。「12:51」は最初こそ貧弱な印象があるが、もの憂い雰囲気がやがてクセになってくるはずだ。一方「Reptilia」は、アルバート・ハモンドJr.とニック・ヴァレンシのギター・プレイが圧巻であり、また茶目っ気を感じさせもする。とにかく執拗（しつよう）なリフとメチャクチャなソロ・プレイのオン・パレードで、このバンドにはもっと伸び伸びとロックする機会があってもよいと思わせる演奏である。そして「Under Control」は、まさしく夢のようだ。もっと具体的に言えば、スミスが「Tracks of My Tears」を演奏している夢のよう、ということになる。
『Room On Fire』は、ザ・ストロークスがありきたりな作風からの脱皮をもくろんだアルバムとして好意的に受け止めるべきだろう。だが彼らは、完全に脱皮するには少しばかり慎重すぎた。勇気を持ちたまえ、君たち。（John Mulvey, Amazon.co.uk）
