リー・リトナーやラリー・カールトンのように目立つ存在ではないけど、いぶし銀のプレイでファンを唸らせるジョン・トロペイ。コーネル・デュプリーなどもそうだが、スタジオ系のギタリストというのは、参加作品は多いのに意外とリーダー作は少なく、トロペイも例外ではない。それだけにこれは待望のアルバムだが、内容がこれまた素晴らしいの一語に尽きる。
スティーヴ・ガッド＆アンソニー・ジャクソンとのトリオ演奏のほか、ソロ・ギターやデュオ、さらにサックスやオルガンを加えた編成で演奏している。フュージョン・ギタリストとして注目を集めたトロペイだが、実はジャズ・ギタリストでもあるんだよ、という点をアピールするかのように、エリントン、ウエス・モンゴメリー、キャノンボール・アダレイ、クリフォード・ブラウンらのジャズ曲を集中的に演奏しているのが一番の特徴だ。といっても、そのギターは本来のR&Bテイストを失わず、時に優しく、時にグルーヴィに語りかける。いやあ、実にいい味を出しているなと思わずウットリの演奏だ。（市川正二）
