奇妙な偶然と言うべきか、ベースメント・ジャックスのサード・アルバム『Kish Kash』のオープニングの数小節は、ジミ・ヘンドリックスのサード・アルバム『Electric Ladyland』のイントロをサンプリングしたものだ。この『Kish Kash』は独創性という点では『Electric Ladyland』に劣るが、両者の曲の構造には共通するものがある。加工されたサウンド、ノイズ、自然音が幾層にも重なって、音楽に深い奥行きを与えているのだ。『Remedy』の「カット & ペースト」の手法を駆使したラテン・スタイルのダンス・チューンを期待すると裏切られるが、本作はハウス・ミュージックという身近な音楽のいまだ知られざる領域に足を踏み入れたアルバムと言える。
オープニング曲「Good Luck」はベルレイズのリサ・ケカウラをフィーチャー。古典的なモータウン調がコンテンポラリー・ロック、パンク、ディスコ・ハウスと同居している。見事に仕上がっているが、ヘヴィなベースとドラムスが強調されているにもかかわらず、ダンス・フロアの喧騒の中で聴くより、静かにじっくりと鑑賞する方がふさわしい。レーベルメイトのディジー・ラスカルが参加したリード・シングル「Lucky Star」は都会人の怒りを表現しており、「Jump and Shout」に似た調子を持つ。ジャックスとディジーのスタイルがうまく溶け合い、中東風のメロディーが立ち現れる。ヒップ・ホップやブレイクス、UKガレージのクラブ・ナイトでかかっても違和感がなさそうな曲だ。
スージー・スーがヴォーカルを提供したタイトル・トラックはパンク色が濃厚で、その強烈なエネルギーはダンス・ミュージックとロックの橋渡し役を担うのに充分だ。「Plug It In」はJC Chasez（ジャスティン・“忙しすぎ、ギャラ高すぎ”・ティンバーレイクの元バンドメイト）とのコラボレーション作で、『Kish Kash』中屈指のパーティー・アンセム。ここで聴ける安定したリズム・セクション、ロックっぽいギター、盛大なコーラスはいつもながらのジャックス節。急進的になりすぎないよう周到に配慮され、文句なしの大ヒット候補ナンバーに仕上がっている。これとは正反対に、ロバート・オウエンスへの甘ったるいオマージュ「If I Ever Recover」は本作の唯一の汚点と言えるだろう。その退屈なことといったら、長年放送されている休日のテレビ・ドラマのサウンドトラックにちょうどいいぐらいだ。
『Kish Kash』はジャックスのベスト・アルバムとは言いがたいが、彼らの新機軸として今まででもっとも重要な意義を持つ作品だ。ジャックスのダークで実験的な面が前面に打ち出されているが、いま少しのひねりがあれば驚異的な名盤になっていたかもと思わずにはいられない。（David Trueman, Amazon.co.uk）
