いつか遠い昔に聴いたようなどこか懐かしくて、暖かな歌声。
歌詞も素敵で、大切な人への贈り物にぴったり。

このアルバムは、ナット・キング・コールの名バラードばかりを集めたもので、間違いなく穏やかな気分に浸ることができます。世界中の人に愛された魅惑の声が、時代を超えて胸の奥深い所に響いてきますので。

リーフレットには、６頁にわたる山口弘滋氏による各曲の丁寧な解説が収録されています。半世紀も前の音楽です。美しい歌声は不滅ですが、その魅力の根源を探るには詳細な説明が必要で、山口弘滋氏の解説はその理解のために多いに助かりました。

彼のバラードは大好きです。甘い歌声のボーカルですので格別です。
ホーギー・カーマイケル作曲の「スターダスト」の名唱の中では、彼の歌うバージョンが特に有名です。美声ではないのですが、少し渋く温かみのある声です。このようなスロー・バラードには格別の雰囲気を醸し出しています。
「ラヴ」は、映画「スウィング・ガールズ」のエンディング・テーマでも使われましたので、日本の若い世代にもまた愛されることになりました。
「モナ・リザ」がいいですね。歌い回しの巧みさは当然として、秘めた感情を切々と歌い上げるところが愛される所以でしょう。

「アンフォゲッタブル」「プリテンド」「トゥー・ヤング」「テンダリー」「枯葉」「魅惑のワルツ」など、このアルバムに収められたジャズやポップスの名曲の数々を聴いていますと、古き良き時代のアメリカを彷彿とするようです。
音楽が多くの人に夢を、喜びを、感動を一杯与え続けられた時代なのでしょうか。その象徴として ナット・キング・コールが存在しているように感じました。
