   このビル・エヴァンスはどうしようもなく悲しい。悲しいだけでなく、悲しさを昇華した美しさに魅了される。エレイン夫人が亡くなったのは1976年。翌77年には音楽教師だった兄ハリーが自殺している。そうした私生活上の不幸な出来事が本作に不安な影を投げかけているのだ。実際1曲目のワルツはエレイン夫人に捧げる曲だし、4曲目はハリー追悼曲で、その曲名は「フォー・オール・ウィ・ノウ」に登場する“ウィ・メイ・ネヴァー・ミート・アゲイン”という歌詞に由来する。なんでもエヴァンスはロバータ・フラック＆ダニー・ハサウェイのデュエットによる「フォー・オール・ウィ・ノウ」をハリーに聴かせてもらったことがあるのだという。共演はエディ・ゴメスとエリオット・ジグモンドで、本作はゴメスが参加した最後のアルバムでもある。

   エヴァンス・トリオというと一般に三位一体のインタープレイが有名だけど、本作はどちらかというとエヴァンス主導の演奏。録音は77年。ワーナーでの第1作ながら、発表されたのはエヴァンスの死後だった。（市川正二）

悲しくて静かで，感傷的で，寝る前に電気を消して聴いたりしてます．
心の中の個人的な部分が，そっと波立つ感じが好きなのです．
慌しい日々の中ではいつだって，感傷に流されることを抑えているけれど，
哀切にすっかり身を委ねてしまえば，こんな綺麗な音さえ，生まれてくるのかしら．

余りにも悲しく、しかしそれ故に美しく心を貫く音。
「MOON BEAMS」などのメロウな作風の行き着いた先とも言える作品。
ただ心をほどくのではなく、同時に痛みも覚えるような静けさ。これは初期・中期
にはない感覚だと思います。
エヴァンスのピアノは水を感じさせます。限りなく透き通り、手を浸すと
芯まで身体が震えるほど冷たい流れ。
ベース・ドラム共に音が大きくリズムがはっきりとしたものですが、
それでも徹底して揺らぐことのない静寂が空気を支配しています。
全編非常に高い完成度。SIDE ONEは特に申し分の無い出来。架空の映画のテーマ曲
であるような３、どこまでも高みに昇っていくような４は素晴らしすぎる。
ボーナスの3曲はやはり不要と言わざるを得ません。いずれもレベルの高い曲ですが、
オリジナルで完璧に完成され完結した世界が築かれているからです。

春は来ないのだとしても、それでも信じなければいけない。
canやmayではなくmustだというところに、エヴァンスの壮絶な決意を感じます。
沢山の素晴らしいレビューが既にあり、自分の言いたいことはほぼ書かれて
いるのだけれど、それでも何か言葉にせずにはいられませんでした。
音楽が好きで本当に良かった、と心から思える作品です。

このアルバムは、内省的過ぎると、評価が分かれているようです。
私はビル・エヴァンスのアルバムの中で、一番美しいピアノを弾いて
いると思います。別れた奥さんの自死、兄の死、追悼の曲もあるので
より内省的になるのは必然であり、そこから生まれる繊細で美しい
ピアノは、もはやジャズを超えて、クラシックですらあります。最近、
頻繁に静音ピアノアルバムが出ていますが、私にはビル・エヴァンス
の模倣に思えてなりません。ピアノアルバムが好きな方はぜひ聴いて
みてください。ただ、曲・８以降はボーナス曲で、少し雰囲気が
変わり、個人的な意見ですが、ないほうがよかったのでは？と思います。
