   アイアン・メイデンの13作目のスタジオ・アルバム『Dance of Death』が実に幸福なタイミングでリリースされる。バンドにとって幸福なのは、この2003年に――長年の苦闘のすえ――ロックがUKチャートの首位を取り返したこと（これはザ・ダークネスの成功によるところが大きい）。そして我々にとって幸福なのは、「モンスターズ・オブ・ロック」のそうそうたる面々の中で、なぜアイアン・メイデンがゴジラのように巨大な存在として君臨しているのかを本作がものの見事に示していることだ。

   前作『Brave New World』で復活を遂げたヴォーカルのブルース・ディッキンスンとギターのエイドリアン・スミスは今や完全に本調子を取り戻し、アイアン・メイデンは再び活気づいているようだ。『Dance of Death』は往年のアイアン・メイデン――特に『Seventh Son of a Seventh Son』の頃――のようなサウンドで、並外れたプロダクションがものをいっている。ファースト・シングル「Wildest Dreams」の異常な猛スピードで幕を開け、3曲目（ぐっと盛り上がる「No More Lies」）に向けて加速していき、以降はおおむねこのペースが維持される。息をつくことができるのはスローなタイトル・トラックとオーケストラを起用した戦場の叙事詩「Paschendale」ぐらいのもの。ディッキンスンの張り詰めたヴォーカルは黙示録的な歌詞に重みを与えている。アイアン・メイデンほどの実力をもたないバンドの手にかかっていたら、この歌はアイロニーに堕していたか、ひたすらバカバカしいだけの曲になっていただろう（タカの鳴き声のサウンド・エフェクトを曲のど真ん中に挿入するなんて、彼ら以外のどんなバンドに許されるというのだ？）。ここにいるのは、シリアスな音楽を演奏する、シリアスな男たちだ。結成から20年以上たつ現在でも、アイアン・メイデンは頼りないヒヨッ子どもにロックの何たるかを少しばかり教えてやるだけの力を残している。『Dance of Death』で、アイアン・メイデンは単に戻ってきたのではなく、トップに返り咲いたのだ。（Robert Burrow, Amazon.co.uk）

　ブルース・ディッキンソンと同時にエイドリアン・スミスも復帰し、ファンを驚喜させた『Brave New World』に続く、13作目『Dance of Death』の登場だ。これは通常CD仕様のUS盤。
　
　話題性で大ヒットした前作を、少なくともクオリティの面では、上回る作品に仕上がっていると思う。前半の楽曲がコンパクトで聴き易いのも、第一印象を良くしている。そして、音が良い！ブルースのヴォーカルがこれだけくっきり聞こえるのは久しぶりだ。

　エイドリアンの手による曲が多いのも目を引く。アメリカン・ロック指向が強いエイドリアンゆえ、ハリスと折り合いが付かなかったのかもしれないが、作曲の面ではエイドリアンが抜けると影響が大きいので、やはり彼には居てもらわないと困る（笑）。

メイデンファンが待ちに待ったIRON MAIDEN通算13作目の「Dance of Death」
8曲目のPaschendaleや11曲目のJourneymanなど名曲が多く１曲１曲の出来もよく、IRON MAIDENらしく仕上がっています。
特に11曲目のJourneymanには脱帽。
ボーナストラックもないのでＣＣＣＤがいやな人はこちらをオススメします。

歌詞カードも付いていますが、ジャケットのセンスが良くないのがマイナスポイント。
